The University of Perpetual Help System DALTA and San Beda University held off their respective opponents to get back-to-back wins in the NCAA Season 100 Juniors Basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The Junior Altas defeated De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde-La Salle Green Hills, 92-88, while the Red Cubs won against San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 69-64.
Perpetual led by 16, 79-63, before the Greenies attempted a comeback in the fourth period. Down 83-71 early in the said frame, the Greenies made an 8-0 run to cut their deficit by four. Icee Callangan then stopped the rally with his jumper before James Ison's freebies trimmed CSB-LSGH's deficit again with less than five minutes left. Gian Gomez put the Mandaluyong-based squad within two at the 3:03 mark before Callangan again gave enough breathing room for the Las Piñas crew.
Jan Roluna's three-point play and Lebron Daep's layup gave Perpetual a nine-point lead before a jumper from Guillian Quines and Gomez' triple gave a slim chance to the Greenies with 39 seconds left. Still, Perpetual managed to keep LSGH at bay en route to its second straight win.
Jericho Cristino had 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block, while Jan Roluna had 16 points, seven boards, five steals, an assist, and a block for the Junior Altas. Daep, meanwhile, logged 14 points and 12 rebounds, along with two steals and one assist.
Quines, meanwhile, had 22 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and three assists, to lead the Greenies. CSB-LSGH slipped to 1-1.
San Beda, meanwhile, survived San Sebastian's late attempt, thanks to free throws made by Francis Doliente.
Up by two, 66-64, with 1:37 left, Dollente sank three out of four free throws after late fouls from Benedick Jimenez and Sanlea Penaverde to seal San Beda's second victory.
Andrei Ugaddan led the Red Cubs with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while MJ Vailoces also registered his own double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds. Laurence Batongbakal had 13 points, while Dollente had nine points.
