Joel Ngo is the new basketball commissioner for NCAA Season 100.
Ngo was seen from the sidelines in the second round of the tournament as former commissioner Ogie Bernarte was moved to a different position due to medical reasons, according to NCAA Season 100 chairman Hercules Callanta.
"I do not remember the time but shortly after the first round, Commissioner Ogie Bernarte fell ill," Callanta said on Saturday.
The NCAA Management Committee chairman said Bernarte's mother also fell ill.
"Sunod-sunod, he had flu-like symptoms, he also had problems with his ankles. Hindi na talaga siya makapunta. We gave him a two-week medical leave, subject to evaluation," added Callanta.
[It was one after the other. He had flu-like symptoms, he also had problems with his ankles. He was unable to come to the venue anymore. We gave him a two-week medical leave, subject to evaluation.]
After the two weeks passed, Callanta said the league was running smoothly despite Bernarte's absence, but his inputs are still of value so he was appointed as consultant instead.
"So after the two weeks passed, because the league was running smoothly, and at the same time, for us, it's best for him to just be given parang duties outside of the NCAA games and serve only as a consultant for the ManComm, as well as for the technical [team] because we needed to improve the games,"
"[If] He will be coming in again, and after two weeks of being outside, baka mamaya magkaroon pa ng problema, masisi pa sa kanya so we decided, sabi ko sa kanya, I think it's best if you extend your leave as a commissioner. Let's give Joel Ngo the commissionership, you serve as a consultant to the ManComm because of health problems."
[If he will be coming again, and after two weeks of being outside, it might cause problems, he might be blamed, so we decided, I told him, I think it's best if you extend your leave as a commissioner. Let's give Joel Ngo the commissionership, you serve as a consultant to the ManComm because of health problems.]
According to Callanta, Ngo, just like Bernarte, was a former PBA referee and served as part of Bernarte's technical team this season.
