NCAA probes alleged mauling incident involving referee, audience after Mapua-Benilde game

The NCAA Management Committee has launched an investigation on the alleged mauling incident that transpired after the NCAA Season 100 game between Mapua University and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

NCAA Management Committee chairman Hercules Callanta of host school Lyceum of the Philippines University said the league's administrative body is now in the process of collecting all the facts — CCTV videos and witness statements — following an incident that involved one game official and several members of the audience, whose identities have yet to be revealed by the league pending the result of the investigation.

Callanta, though, shared that the said referee has already undergone medicolegal procedure but said it is up to him whether he will file a complaint or not.

"There was an incident that took place after the CSB-Mapua game, when the referees went towards their place. They were accosted by several people we do not know yet how many and who," Callanta told GMA News Online in an interview on Sunday.

"He was punched and in effect, good description, ay he was mauled. It was a quick hit and then they scampered. So we are presently asking for video recordings CCTV from MOA."

As for the sanctions, Callanta said the league's current policy regarding sanctions only covers the players, coaches, and even the referees. Audience, however, may be banned from watching any NCAA game.

"We can only look at who was supposed to be at the bench, we can penalize coaches, players, and even referees," he added.

"As far as the audiences are concerned, the NCAA can do something along the line of banning them from watching any NCAA games, just to make sure that violence doesn’t happen again."

Callanta said they will hold an emergency meeting later at 2 p.m. to address the matter.
