Cyril Gonzales is set for an NCAA homecoming.
The 6-foot guard announced on Saturday that he is leaving University of the Philippines after two seasons in the UAAP, setting the stage for his much-awaited return to Mapua University where he played for in the past.
"The past few years has shown me what it’s like to be a true Fighting Maroon," Gonzales said in an Instagram post.
"UP wasn’t just a phase but a piece of my heart. My thoughts are filled with a deep sense of respect and thankfulness as I sit here, realizing that my chapter fighting for the maroons is coming to a close."
As he bid goodbye to the Fighting Maroons, Gonzales didn't look that far in searching for a new home.
Gonzales suited up for the Cardinals in Season 95, where he posted averages of 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks as Mapua fell short of entering the Final Four with an even 9-9 card.
He then decided to initially transfer to National University, but changed his mind as he instead jumped ship to UP, where he would play for in Seasons 85 and 86.
Gonzales said he opted to return to Mapua as he would like to give back to head coach Randy Alcantara.
"Gusto ko lang din maglaro para kay coach Randy ulit and makabawi sa. kanya," he told GMA News Online in a message.
(I want to play for coach Randy and return the favor to him.)
In Mapua, Gonzales will be a huge addition to the roster that already features reigning MVP Clint Escamis and other rising cagers Marc Cuenco, JC Recto, and Kobe Dalisay. Gonzales' arrival is also a welcome sight for Alcantara, especially after another guard in Peter Rosillo left the squad to transfer to Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
