Jonathan Medina sinks game-winner as JRU escapes Lyceum in 2OT thriller | NCAA Philippines

Jonathan Medina drained the game-winning basket to lift Jose Rizal University to a wild 88-87 double overtime victory against Lyceum of the Philippines University in NCAA Season 99 on Tuesday.

Four periods were far from enough for both teams as they needed two overtimes, the second of which JRU opened with two consecutive baskets before Lyceum crawled back to retake the lead at 87-86.

Medina then buried a one-handed jumper to give JRU the one-point cushion with 7.5 ticks left before the Pirates ultimately succumbed after two misses down the stretch.

Joshua Guiab led JRU with 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting alongside eight rebounds and one assist while Agem Miranda and Marwin Dionisio chipped in 14 markers apiece.

Medina finished six points, three rebound, one assist, and one block, aside from his game-winner. He scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

With both teams coming off two-game losing streaks, the Heavy Bombers improved to 5-3 while Lyceum dropped to 6-3 to close out its first round campaign.

Miranda showed his hustle in the third, converting seven points as the JRU continued to control the tempo of the game with a 52-45 lead heading to the fourth.

Dionisio then took over as the veteran big man knocked down four freebies before his layup off a steal sent the Heavy Bombers to a 66-56 cushion. Lyceum would answer with a two straight baskets courtesy of team captain Enoch Valdez, 66-61.

Dionisio completed an alley-oop pass from JL Delos Santos, but Valdez’ three-point play tied things up at 71-all to force the first overtime.

A split from JM Bravo tied things up at 82-all in the first extra period as neither team can come up with another basket for a second OT.

It didn’t help Lyceum in the extra periods when Valdez, who tallied 14 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Pirates in the game, fouled out with 45.6 left in the first overtime.

Valdez finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Bravo chipped in with 20 and 10 but that wasn't enough for LPU in this one.

JRU 88 - Guiab 18, Miranda 14, Dionisio 14, Sarmiento 9, Argente 8, Medina 6, Delos Santos 5, Ramos 5, De Leon 4, Pabico 2, Sy 2, Arenal 1, Mosqueda 0, Barrera 0.
