The backcourt duo of Robi Nayve and Migs Oczon presided for De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde as they held off University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 86-80, in NCAA Season 99 on Tuesday.
Nayve starred with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field alongside five rebounds, four assists, and one steal while Oczon shone with 19 markers, with eight of those coming in the fourth quarter, to go with five boards, two dimes, two blocks, and one steal.
Benilde, last season’s runner-up, picked up its first win streak of this season with back-to-back victories to improve to an even 3-3 card. Perpetual, on the other hand, slid to 1-4.
Up by just four points at the half, the Blazers banked on the hot hand of Nayve, who dropped 11 of his overall output in the third, as they took a 68-54 lead. Oczon also scored six points during that frame to allow Benilde to pull away.
Oczon then fired a corner triple early in the fourth to send Benilde to a 20-point advantage at 75-55 before the ALTAs stage a late uprising.
Behind a 10-run led by Cyrus Nitura and John Abis, Perpetual trimmed its deficit to 10 before Joey Barcuma’s triple further sliced it to a single digit disadvantage, 77-68, with 2:24 left.
Prince Carlos then sank a jumper in the final 59.6 seconds and Oczon split his two free throws to seal the deal.
The win by Benilde spoiled a 24-point outing from Perpetual sophomore Jun Roque, who also collected six rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the losing effort.
Benilde will next take on Arellano University on Sunday while Perpetual will face San Sebastian on Friday.
