LPU big man Shawn Umali apologizes for 'inappropriate behavior' vs San Beda

Shawn Umali took to Instagram to apologize for his actions that led to his ejection late during Lyceum of the Philippines University's match against San Beda University on Sunday in NCAA Season 99.

"I am writing to extend my sincerest apologies for my inappropriate behavior during our recent game against the San Beda Red Lions. I deeply regret my actions and the negative impact they may have had on me and the LPU community," Umali said in a post on Monday morning.

Umali was thrown out of the game with 3.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter following a verbal altercation with several San Beda players just as when he was about to shoot two free throws with the Pirates up, 67-62.

He was still able to knock down the first free throw, but was not able to attempt the second one after the game officials whistled him for a technical foul and eventually, ejection. Teammate Renz Villegas took the other charity.

The Pirates won the contest, 67-63, for their sixth straight win.

After the game, Lyceum head coach Gilbert Malabanan took the blame for his veteran big man's actions that would automatically merit a one-game suspension.

Umali, for his part, said he was just giving his best in the game while also calling out some San Beda fans who were throwing coins onto the court during the incident.

"Let us not allow our emotions to get to the point that can hurt us by means of throwing coins to the players. I am giving my very best each game to show my capabilities and to contribute to our team," he added.

Despite his actions, Umali also expressed his apologies to the Lyceum community.

"I would like to express my apologies and gratitude as well to the LPU community for the support and encouragement you have shown me."
