Jacob Cortez has been San Beda University's top player in their past three games, averaging 15 points, 4.33 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and a steal per game.
During their 83-77 win against De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, the second generation Cortez posted 20 markers, six boards, three dimes, and a swat to lead the Red Lions to their second win in three games.
San Beda head coach Yuri Escueta recognized Cortez' performance since they opened their campaign in NCAA Season 99.
"Jacob is really a talent," Escueta said in a mix of English and Filipino. "But the thing is he needs to be consistent. That's the challenge, for him to be a superstar in the tournament, you need to be consistent every game."
Escueta said that he has talked to Cortez about what he needs to improve on, which includes fixing a 'flaw' that the San Beda coach did not reveal.
While Cortez has been surrounded by influences, such as his former PBA star dad Mike Cortez, who also talks to him about his game, the San Beda guard also credited Escueta for his confidence this season.
"From last season, I wasn't really being used but he saw what I was capable of doing, he saw my hard work this offseason. I guess he has a lot of confidence in me, [with that] I have a lot of confidence in myself," said Cortez.
San Beda will next face their rival Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Friday.
