SBP reaches out to NCAA to relay 'serious concern' on JRU-Benilde scuffle

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has reached out to the National Collegiate Athletic Association to relay its "serious concern" over the incident in the match between Jose Rizal University and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Thursday, SBP said it "strongly condemns acts of on court violence in basketball, whether it is directed towards a player, an official or a fan."

With the league a member of the basketball body, the SBP said it has asked executive director Sonny Barrios to reach out to SBP officials and NCAA Management Committee members Dax Castellano and Paul Supan.

"They discussed the shared view of condemning on court violence, adoption of preventive measures to avoid a repetition of the deplorable incident, including a review of security protocols, and meting out the necessary sanctions in a fair manner," the statement read.

"We in SBP are one with NCAA in its direction to proactively take the appropriate steps to move the league forward in a professional manner and positively address the issues at hand for the benefit of NCAA and the sport of Basketball."

The NCAA Management Committee on Wednesday slapped sanctions to some players involved in the incident, with JRU's John Amores getting an indefinite suspension from the league.

The NCAA also said it "condemns, and will not tolerate, any acts of violence that will endanger our athletes, participants, officials, supporters, and the public."

JRU, for its part, also suspended Amores indefinitely and apologized for the incident.

"Violence has no part in the sport of basketball, and as a member of the NCAA, we shall continue to uphold the highest ideals of collegiate athletic competitions," JRU said.
