Fran Yu has been a vital cog for Colegio de San Juan de Letran during their ongoing streak in NCAA Season 98.
The Knights took down all of their opponents in the past six games, and in the most recent three contests against University of Perpetual Help DALTA, Arellano University, and San Sebastian College-Recoletos, the 5-foot-10 Yu normed 12.67 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 0.3 blocks per game.
His best game from the past three outings was his 19-point explosion in the second half against the Stags, which went with five rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. That performance helped the Knights improve their record to 9-3 and take a hold of the solo second spot in their championship retention bid.
Yu's impressive numbers and his impact on the Knights' campaign earned him the Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Player of the Week award presented by the Philippine Sports Commission and San Miguel Corporation.
For Yu, the team keeps its eyes on the prize: the third straight title for the Muralla-based squad.
“As a player 'di naman ako individual player, kaya nga team kami, hindi ko hinahangad ‘yung mga ganong award (MVP) – blessings na lang ‘yon. Amin talaga as a team is makuha ‘yung three-peat,” Yu said.
Yu, the first Knight to bag the award this season, bested teammate Brent Paraiso, Perpetual's John Abis, and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde's Will Gozum and Miggy Corteza.
The weekly recognition is decided and deliberated by the members of the print and online media regularly covering the league and also backed by minor sponsors MNL Kingpin, Tinapayan Festival, and Jockey.
