Colegio de San Juan de Letran's Louie Sangalang and Brent Paraiso got carried away by their emotions during a highly-physical game between the Knights and the Mapua University Cardinals in NCAA Season 98 action on Tuesday.
While Letran emerged with a hard-fought 67-62 win over Mapua, the two foul-plagued cagers were not able to finish the ball game after getting punished with ejections.
Sangalang was whistled for two technical fouls in the game, with the second one coming on a taunting violation with only 13.8 seconds left to play in the game.
After the game, he said he was surprised by the way the game officials called the contest.
"Hindi rin namin alam. Nagulat kami sa tawag ng referees. Ang dami (tawag) — sa rebound, sa mga sinasadyang (gesture). Sa amin, nakikita talaga. Buti nakapag-adjust iyong buong team," Sangalang said.
The Letran big man admitted, though, that he let his emotions get the better of him.
"Siguro may mali din ako. Ganito talaga ako eh, nadadala talaga ako ng emosyon ko lalo 'pag nanalo kami. Iyon lang lagi iyong goal namin (manalo) lalo kapag physical 'yung kalaban," said Sangalang.
Paraiso, meanwhile, was sent off the court earlier in the fourth after getting called for a disqualifying foul for an act of violence. Paraiso was caught throwing an elbow at Mapua's Rence Nocum when the two battled for a loose ball at the 5:28 mark of the fourth quarter.
Though there was no whistle blown on the initial incident, the referees eventually made a review that resulted in Paraiso's ejection, something the player said he wasn't sure was allowed under the rules.
"Hindi ko lang alam kung pwedeng i-review 'yung mga ganoon na foul. Di ko alam, baka tama sila pero we just follow kung ano 'yung decision nila," he said.
The referees, though, based their review on a new FIBA rule that states that "referees are authorized to stop the game immediately to review any act of violence or potential act of violence."
