Despite upset of Mapua, Lyceum coach stresses Pirates should not get ahead of themselves

Lyceum of the Philippines University may have scored a huge upset of last season's runner-up Mapua University, but the Pirates are not about to get ahead of themselves early in this part of NCAA Season 98.

The Pirates, who were coming off a loss to College of Saint Benilde last Sunday,  pulled off a 76-67 victory over the Cardinals to barge into the win column for a 1-1 slate.

But Lyceum coach Gilbert Malabanan said it's too early to make a statement.

"Actually sa game namin kanina, 'yun talaga 'yung gusto namin pero siyempre marami pa 'yang games eh. Kumbaga marami pa kaming dadaanan na games," said Malabanan.

"Pero very important here is, win or lose, we have to stick together. Doon namin matetest kung talagang as a team na kami na naglalaro."

Malabanan, though, said the win was big for Lyceum, especially because it came at the expense of a quality team like Mapua, which was looking for back-to-back wins after defeating San Beda University in the opening game-day schedule.

"Actually it's a very, very big win for us and everybody knows naman is a strong team, they were a contender last season. Sabi ko lang sa players ko na we have to follow the system, we have to play aggressively offensively and defensively and we got that win," added the mentor.

"Siguro may first-game jitters and I got mad at them nga eh nung last game namin kasi sabi ko, this is now what we are. Hindi tayo 'to eh. So I'm so happy, good bounce back for us in this second game."
