San Beda's Jacob Cortez leans on wisdom of father Mike as he makes impact in Red Lions debut

In the first game of his NCAA career, Jacob Cortez didn't disappoint.

And the gutsy young guard shared his confidence on the court stems partly from the wisdom and advice he continuously receives from his father Mike, a former top PBA overall pick and is a three-time champion in the pros.

"My father calls me from time to time like before every game. Like last night, we called and he just gives me wisdom and motivation and what to do," Jacob shared with GMA News Online.

Jacob produced some quality minutes off the bench for head coach Boyet Fernandez, chipping in seven points, two rebounds, and two assists in just almost 16 minutes of play.

And the 5-foot-11 court general left his mark at just the right time as they escaped De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 67-63, to remain in contention for a twice-to-beat bonus at 7-1.

"Going into this game, I just stayed ready during training and even before this season," he added.

"I think I played a big role today and even though they started to catch up, I just told the team to stay positive all the time and win the ball game."

Only a rookie, Cortez also shared being in the Red Lions' den is something he that has benefited him as a younger player.

"Being one of the young guns, I think it's good for me because I get to learn from the older players or who have the experience so when I become older, I'll be wiser and better in the game."
