Prior to making a move to San Beda University in 2015, Robert Bolick almost gave up on his basketball career in Manila after struggling to find playing time with his previous team.
The current NorthPort guard in the PBA admitted that he tried out his luck in other high profile schools, but thanks to former Red Lions head coach Jamike Jarin, Bolick found his way to Mendiola.
“I would be lying if I said no (about thinking of giving up),” Bolick said in Filipino on Wednesday’s episode of 'Rise Up Stronger: The Road to NCAA Season 96'.
“That’s normal because I was not being given the playing time. And that was my first time in my basketball career because back in high school, I was always on the court, then came college, I did not have my break.”
His transfer to San Beda, according to Bolick, tops the list of the best decisions he made in his life so far and that’s why he was thankful that he was able to rekindle his love for the game back then.
“I was very ashamed to go home because I was not playing but it was also the one that fueled me to continue.”
The 6-foot-1 guard lived up to his dream and continued the winning culture of San Beda.
In fact, he was a key cog in Red Lions’ three-peat NCAA title run from 2016-2018, where he was easily catapulted in the school’s list of legendary cagers.
“I gave my two years already to my previous school so I thought it’s time for me to move on and look for other opportunities before I call myself not worthy of a career here in Manila,” he said.
“Until now, I still thank him (coach Jamike).”
