“Make as many mistakes as you can, but make sure to learn from them.”
Current Letran head coach Bonnie Tan, former Knight JP Calvo and actor Derek Ramsay were in chorus in saying that athletes of this generation should not be afraid of committing mistakes as these will be their tools moving forward.
The three were guests on the NCAA primer show ‘Rise Up Stronger: The Road to NCAA Season 96’ on Tuesday.
Calvo, who was an essential part of the Letran squad that won the 2015 NCAA title, said that as a cager coming from province, he knows that it is important to seek guidance from the seniors if ever you had a mistake.
“Committing a mistake is normal because that’s where you would learn your lesson,” said Calvo, who’s now suiting up for Terrafirma in the PBA.
“Just always ask for guidance from your seniors because like me, when I first entered Letran, I was not getting a lot of minutes at first but the seniors said that I should just learn from all those experiences.”
Ramsay had the same sentiments.
The 44-year-old Kapuso actor, who saw action for a Letran-affiliated PBL team back in the 2004, said that what’s important is to first accept one’s mistakes then use them as a learning tool in whatever field one chooses to be in.

“Mistakes? I had a lot,” he shared.
“That’s actually the best lesson, make mistakes and learn from it. It’s important that when you make a mistake, accept it.”
Tan, who steered the Knights to the Season 95 championship, asserted that while basketball is evolving, young hopefuls should learn from past generations and apply their learnings in today’s style of basketball.
“Other players tend to go extra but they’re forgetting the fundamentals in basic basketball training so that’s my only advice, let’s correct it.”
Watch ‘Rise Up Stronger: The Road to NCAA Season 96’ every weekday (2:45 p.m.), Saturdays (4:30 p.m), and Sundays (5:05 p.m.) on GTV.
