BGC's 5th avenue will go car-free every weekend beginning February 27 | NCAA Philippines

If going carless and alfresco dining are the trend among cities, then we're all for it.

Because look: Every Saturday and Sunday beginning February 27, the long stretch of 5th Avenue in BGC will go car-free to allow al fresco dining, give space for walking and even some play.

In a Facebook post, Bonifacio High Street said My Street High Street Car-Free Weekends will be from 11am to 9pm every Saturday and Sunday.

A little caveat: "Based on IATF protocols, dining inside restos or in al fresco areas is prohibited for minors and seniors as of now, but they may order take-away," it said.

My Street High Street Car-free Weekends follows the highly successful Makati Street Meet at Rada Street, where restaurants on the Legaspi Village street took their tables outdoors for a relaxing al fresco Sunday dining.

Here's hoping more cities follow suit and allow residents to take their streets back and enjoy their city right on the ground, if only on weekends.

Such activities will not only help people with their mental-wellbeing after being cooped up for so long, but these initiatives also encourage movement — walking, playing, could we add biking? — which is healthy for everyone, including the planet. — LA, GMA News
