Psalms David, handpicked by Christian Bautista to perform his original composition

Psalms David overflows with gratitude after being personally chosen by Christian Bautista to be the voice behind the latter’s original composition, “I Need To Know.”

Psalms granted GMANetwork.com an exclusive interview on the day of the release of his new song. “I Need To Know” is his sophomore single under GMA Music, and it’s composed by no less than the Asia’s Romantic Balladeer.

Psalms beamed with enthusiasm, recalling how Christian surprised him and broke the news.

“Siyempre first of all po, sobrang grateful ako na ako ‘yung pinili ni Sir Christian na kumanta nung song niya na “I Need To Know.” Actually what happened was, minessage niya po ako sa Viber and he sent me the song before asking me to sing it. Sabi niya, ‘Okay ba, maganda ba ‘yung kanta?’ Parang pinapa-check niya po sa akin. Sabi ko, ‘Sir Christian, maganda. Sino po ang kakanta nito? Kailan n’yo po ire-release?' Ganun, akala ko siya ‘yung kakanta eh. Tapos sabi niya ako daw pala ‘yung kakanta. So I’m really grateful na ako ‘yung napili niya.

For the alumnus from The Clash season 1, this project is the closest thing to his dream collaboration with Christian.

“Si Sir Christian talaga ‘yung gusto ko maka-collab. Hindi man siya duet – or tingnan natin kung magkakaroon kami ng duet – hindi man siya duet talaga pero I’m happy na I got the chance to work with him. I did the recording with his guidance din.”

He also recalled how Christian had been very hands-on in bringing “I Need To Know” to life. The more senior Kapuso singer rented a studio for Psalms and he oversaw his recording even if it meant long exchanges of consultations over a teleconferencing app.  

Psalms further shared, “Kulang ‘yung oras for the back-up vocals and the harmonies kasi sobrang daming harmonies and back-up vocals nung song sa bandang huli and maririnig n’yo ‘yun. So dito ako nag-record sa bahay nung ibang harmonies and ‘yung ibang harmonies si Sir Christian ‘yung mismong gumawa. Siya ‘yung boses doon sa ibang harmonies.”

Aside from realizing his dream to work with the Asia’s Romantic Balladeer, Psalms also revealed that singing “I Need To Know” taught him a lesson about love.

“Sabi ni Sir Christian he wants to explore different kinds, different spectrums of the “love life.” The song is about someone who, kunwari ikaw you’re courting a girl and there’s a lot of people courting her din. Kagaya doon sa lyrics, ‘Who will it be? Him or me?’ Sino bang pipiliin mo? So parang napag-usapan namin ni Sir Christian na ang main point nung kanta is in any relationship, whether it be romantic or not, or friendship man siya, communication is really the key. So ‘yun ‘yung natutunan ko.”
