Here is another reason to visit Bohol.

Bohol Island was named as the very first Global Geopark of the Philippines by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

UNESCO announced in a statement the addition of 18 new sites to its Global Geoparks network, which includes the island of Bohol.

According to the international organization, “The geopark abounds in karstic geosites such as caves, sinkholes and cone karst, including the famous cone-shaped Chocolate Hills in the centre of the geopark.”

UNESCO added that the Danajon Double Barrier Reef in the northern coast of Bohol is the only one of its kind in Southeast Asia, as well as one of the six documented double barrier reefs on Earth.

The official page of the Bohol Island Geopark also shared the good news on Wednesday.

“We are thrilled to share with you that Bohol Island has officially become the very first Global Geopark of the Philippines,” it said in a Facebook post.

Created in 2015, the UNESCO Global Geopark recognizes “geological heritage of international significance.”

“May this milestone inspire us more to collaborate for the sustainable development of our geopark and serve as an inspiration for other regions and provinces in the Philippines to follow suit,” the Bohol Island Geopark added.

The addition of the new geoparks during UNESCO's 216th Executive Board Session last May 24 brings the network total to 195 in 48 countries.
