YouTube reveals initiatives to protect kids from harmful content

There's no denying the influence of YouTube on adults and kids.
The pandemic only reiterated that fact, with viewers turning to the online video sharing platform for a gamut of content - from informative to entertainment programs easily accessible 24/7.
However, the platform's diverse and free-for-all content also raises concern among parents on the types of shows their kids might stumble upon.
In response, YouTube recently revealed the steps it had taken to safeguard its viewers, particularly kids and families.
The platform highlighted four “Rs” - removing harmful content, raising authoritative voices, reducing borderline content, and rewarding trusted creators.
Removing harmful content
YouTube stressed its commitment to remove harmful content as quickly as possible. The platform mentioned updating its policy to conceal content aimed towards minors and families that are sexual, violent, obscene, and mature.
The platform reportedly weed out over 1.8 million videos found to have violated child safety policies.
YouTube Kids also has specific content policies and a much smaller set of channels and videos available that are allowed on the app.
It has also removed overly commercial content from YouTube Kids, such as videos that only focus on product packaging or directly encourage children to spend money.
Raising authoritative voices, reducing borderline content
YouTube has partnered with child development specialists to help set quality principles to connect families with valuable content.
For example, YouTube Kids only welcome age-appropriate videos and channels.
These videos need to engaging and enriching, inspire curiosity and imagination, promote diverse perspectives, and encourage kids to discover their interests and passions.

Rewarding trusted creators
To encourage quality content, YouTube implemented additional monetization policies for content creators who focus on coming up with kids and family-friendly programs.
Channels that primarily target young audiences or are classified as “made for kids” will need to deliver high-quality content and comply with kids-specific monetization policies.
Meanwhile, here are some YouTube channels suited for kids and teens.
