LimeWire is back but as an NFT marketplace

The former go-to file sharing platform returns to the scene but is taking into a contemporary form.

There's been an apparent resurgence of trends from the 2000s with the rise of Y2K fashion, bright-colored makeup, and film cameras. But it's safe to say that those are not the only things coming back from that era as popular file sharing platform LimeWire has also been relaunched.

In case you didn't know, LimeWire is a peer-to-peer file sharing software that was launched in May 2000. The platform was mainly used for downloading and uploading files such as videos, images, and, most notably of all, music. It paved the way for everyone to get access to different types of songs from various artists around the world for free.

But as much of an icon it is, LimeWire got shut down in October 2010 due to copyright infringement charges filed by the Record Industry Association of America. Patrons had to say goodbye to the platform.

Fast forward to 2022 when Spotify and Apple Music exist, LimeWire is making a comeback but this time as an NFT (non-fungible token) marketplace. Led by CEOs Paul and Julian Zehetmayr, LimeWire has now become a digital collectibles marketplace for music and the broader art and entertainment space.

According to LimeWire, “music fans and collectors can buy and trade a variety [of] exclusive music-related assets, such as limited editions, pre-release music, unreleased demos, graphical artwork, unseen live versions, as well as digital merchandise and backstage content.”

LimeWire still encapsulates its passion for music but this time they're navigating it with a more modern approach and hopping on the NFT bandwagon.

To make their comeback official, LimeWire released a one-minute advertisement that brought nostalgia to all the millennials who used the platform back in the day with its use of Soulja Boy's “Crank That” track.

The company's global creative director, Florestan Rösemann, shared in a statement, “Our ad is both a love letter to the 2000s and a celebration of the new LimeWire. Just like the characters in the commercial, many of us were teenagers when LimeWire first was around and are now grown-ups to see the relaunch of the brand.”
