Vincent van Gogh's 'The Starry Night' painting has a LEGO counterpart

There's no doubt that Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night painting has garnered a lot of traction through the years despite lacking appreciation during the painter's lifetime. It became one of the most famous landscape paintings of all time that's so enthralling to the point that you lose yourself in it.
It is a thought-provoking masterpiece that embodies something new every time you stare at it. And LEGO supports the idea to the point that it gave fans of the 1889 painting a chance to reimagine the piece once again through their 3D brick version.

The LEGO counterpart of van Gogh's painting was designed by Truman Cheng and comes with 2,316 bricks. He submitted the LEGO design on the LEGO Ideas platform and garnered over 10,000 votes which eventually led to the fulfillment of the dream design.
The Ph.D. student and LEGO fan was simply playing with his LEGO bricks when he realized that stacking them together in random intervals resembled van Gogh's iconic brush strokes. He shares in an interview with LEGO, “It was a good brain tease to come up with tricks and techniques to capture the look of the original painting.”
He further explains, “The brushwork goes into many directions in the moon and the swirling cloud, so there was some creative use of bracket and clip elements involved.”

Not only did Truman's design of van Gogh's The Starry Night pave the way to experience the painter's work in a different aspect but also help reshape the way people look at LEGO pieces.
Head of global marketing at LEGO, Federico Begher, shares, “Truman's design was a masterpiece in itself -- showing how many different LEGO elements and techniques could be used to replicate van Gogh's iconic painting.”

The creation of the LEGO model was done in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) which acquired Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night painting in 1941. Associate Director of MoMA Sarah Suzuki shares, “At MoMA, we celebrate the opportunity to connect art and audiences, and are thrilled to be part of a new way to experience van Gogh's work, and to inspire the creative impulse in people of all ages.”
The LEGO set catered to adults ages 18 and above will be exclusively available for LEGO VIPs and MoMA members on May 25 and will be available to the entire public on June 1. It will be sold for $169.99 or ₱8914.45 and will also come with a miniature figure of Vincent van Gogh.
