Wave 89.1's closure is just the latest radio to shutter its operations in the country.

Yet another shift is happening in the Philippine broadcast media landscape as Wave 89.1 bids goodbye to the airwaves.

The radio station made the announcement on its official Facebook page. In the graphic uploaded, the radio station declared that “The end is here” and thanked its faithful listeners for their “many years of love and support.”

“So many memories. Good times and bad. Laughter and tears. WE CHANGED THE GAME. No one can say otherwise,” the station recalled in its posted statement.

In the comments to the post, faithful listeners looked back at their memories of the radio station and its DJs like Joe D' Mango. Singers like Thyro Alfaro, Fatima Palma-Loo, and Yumi Lacsamana also expressed their appreciation for the help Wave 89.1 gave to their careers.

Wave 89.1 began as KB 89.1 back in 1975 as an easy listening radio station before rebranding as 89 DMZ in 1989 and playing dance and hip hop music as well as remixes. Francis Magalona also hosted The Word-up Show on the station during Saturday nights. The station fully became Wave 89.1 back in 2001 with Joe D' Mango acting as station manager.

Wave 89.1 will now be known as Adventist World Radio 89.1 after being taken over by Adventist Media and will exclusively broadcast religious content. The new station is set to launch on April 24.

Wave 89.1 is just the latest radio station in the country to shutter its operations. In 2021, K-Lite let go of all its employees due to economic losses suffered during the global coronavirus pandemic. Back in 2010, loyal listeners bid an emotional farewell to NU107.
