Emman Atienza speaks up about losing weight: "Please remember the numbers on your scale aren't a measure of your self worth."

Kuya Kim Atienza's daughter, Emman Atienza, has always been vocal about her journey when it comes to mental health. She serves as an inspiration to all of those who are also struggling like her as she normalizes the topic and fight the stigma surrounding it.

Recently, Emman bared her weight loss journey with her Instagram followers and shared that she had a hard time dealing with that part of herself. On her IG, she posted a photo of a diary entry detailing her struggles with her weight and a collage of screenshots from her TikTok videos.

She shared in the caption, “I posted a video on my tiktok showing my 'weight loss journey' thinking nothing of it until people started asking me 'how did you lose weight?' I'm not going to lie, after properly dieting and losing an increasingly high amount of weight, I became obsessive over my calories. I would sometimes eat much less than a healthy body needs to survive. It became so obsessive that others became concerned about my own health and my daily functioning was at stake.”

“Even with my mental state, I was refused professional help because I wasn't 'clinically underweight' at the time. This is yet another way the stereotypes associated with mental health can truly affect people. I was struggling with my body, caloric intake, and more. yet, because I wasn't underweight I couldn't get help. This caused my mentality to deteriorate further,” Emman explains.

Emman admits that she obsessed over her weight for a time causing her mental health to be put at stake. But even as she acknowledged the problem and made an initiative to get better, she was denied the help she deserved and needed. Because of a certain criteria, she wasn't deemed “fit” for professional help. Thus, making her spiral into a much worse mental state.

But at the end of the day, Emman knew better than to settle for what she didn't deserve and did her research. She even shared in her post what she learned and informed her followers. “anorexia nervosa is defined as 'an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat' in no area does it specify 'underweight.' Yet i was only given professional help once I was clinically underweight,” she says.

Emman claps back at those who refused to give her help because of the stigma and reminds her followers that it doesn't have to be this way. She shares, “I urge everyone to lose weight healthily. if you are already struggling, I encourage you to seek help even if you aren't underweight. remember that anorexia or any eating disorder isn't defined by your weight, it's your mental state and daily habits in which symptoms are present.”

As she encourages her followers, she also normalizes the fact that people aren't defined by the measurements they have. Emman explains, “Please remember the numbers on your scale aren't a measure of your self worth. i was beautiful before and after my weight loss. I'm recovered now but, previously, i simply chose to live a lifestyle with a better diet (which eventually turned sour). but you don't have to end up the same way. do your research before dieting and remember to know your limits.”
