Underarm Chicken Skin: What Causes It and How to Deal With It
Keratosis pilaris or famously known as “chicken skin” is a common skin condition that causes patches of rough, tiny bumps to appear on the skin. It usually occurs on your underarms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks.
WHAT CAUSES IT
According to Dra. Jean Marquez, there are many reasons why chicken skin occurs on a person's underarms. One is the irritation brought about by constant waxing, shaving, and plucking and another culprit is the rubbing of rough or too strong deodorants. Link:
Doing these leads to plugging of the pores. If you also have dry or irritated skin, most often the skin on your underarms is also dry and can lead to chicken skin.
HOW TO DEAL WITH IT
1. You can put creams to moisturize and soften the area. Moisturizers with lactic acid and/or glycerin are recommended to smoothen the skin and get rid of those tiny bumps.
2. You can also undergo permanent laser hair removal to get rid of the bumps of the hair follicles to smoothen the underarm area.
3. You can also undergo pigment lasers to whiten and smoothen your underarms later on.
Instead of waxing, shaving, and plucking hair from your underarms, you can undergo laser hair removal for a seamless and non-darkening method.
For deodorants, make sure to stir clear of harsh chemicals and use one that can keep your skin hydrated.
