FDA warns public from buying glow in the dark lato-lato

For a lot of us, the steady clack-clack of the lato-lato has become a day-to-day occurrence. While a recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) public health warning may not reduce the noise, it may make parents be choosier about the lato-lato they choose to buy.
The FDA posted a public health warning on its official Facebook page cautioning the public from buying the “Lato Lato Toys With Handle Glow In The Dark Latto Latto Toy Toy Tok Tok Old School Toy Etek Toy Lato Lato Makasar” as seen on an online selling website.
In the public health warning, the FDA noted that the product does not have a valid Certificate of Product Notification (CPN), which is required if a product is to be sold or distributed in the country. Without the certificate, the FDA cannot assure its quality and safety, and may pose a health risk to consumers.
Some of the health risks that the FDA listed in its warning include endocrine disruption, reproductive or development effects; or injury, choking, or suffocation due to small or broken parts.
The general public warning is the latest government move targeting the health and safety of Filipino children. Back in September last year, Senator Lito Lapid filed Senate Bill No. 1231, which seeks to ban junk food and sugary drinks from being sold, distributed, or promoted inside and 100 meters from the perimeter of public schools and educational institutions.
Back in March this year, UNICEF released a report that revealed that 74 percent of Filipino children aged 13 to 15 eat less than three portions of vegetables per day, while 38 percent drink at least one soft drink per day.
The report called on the government to promote locally produced food at affordable prices; build and develop areas where children can play and do sports; enforce policies that promote healthy school food environments; as well as introduce mandatory legislation restricting the marketing of unhealthy food to children.
