Captain America: Brave New World

Yesterday was a red-letter day for Filipino Marvel fans as the country became one of the first in the world to see the latest Marvel movie, Captain America: Brave New World. The premiere was held yesterday at the SM Megamall IMAX Cinema, with an activity-filled booth opened at the mall's Fashion Hall to celebrate the new release. The booth featured a claw machine, a “Hulk Smash” game, and life-size statues of movie characters Captain America and the Red Hulk, and will be open to the public until February 18. Captain America: Brave New World follows the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, as he navigates a global order being reshaped by the discovery of adamantium of the Celestial body that emerged from the Indian Ocean during the movie Eternals. When a breach in the newly-elected American president Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross' inner circle ends up with far-reaching geopolitical effects, Sam must find out who the breach is in order to ensure peace in the world. While Captain America: Brave New World is the latest film in the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe, it actually takes its cues from one of the Universe's classics - Captain America: The Winter Soldier. All the story beats are there: the recovery of a McGuffin, a wisecracking sidekick, a Black Widow, and a Super Soldier who has been mind-controlled. Those story beats still work today as they did more than a decade ago as it keeps the movie entertaining to watch. But what really ups the ante is Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford after the passing of its original actor, William Hurt. It's hard not to think of the current political climate while watching the character of Thaddeus Ross, a temperamental American president that just might plunge the world into a global conflict. That one of its action pieces happens in an ocean as world powers fight over a precious resource also brings to mind the current geopolitical wrangling over the West Philippine Sea. It's these real-world echoes, coupled with the Marvel tropes that audiences have grown to love - humor, connection to a greater cinematic universe, and two unexpected cameos - that make the film a truly thrilling watch. While it may not reach the heights of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's compelling enough for audiences to want to see yet another adventure featuring Captain America. Meanwhile, check out the gallery below to check out scenes from the Captain America: Brave New World Philippine premeire.
