Ukay-ukay is currently experiencing a resurgence and is becoming a thing again since restrictions are slowly easing up in the country.

If you scroll through your TikTok's For You Page, you'll probably see a few videos of ukay-ukay hauls or people scouring through different thrift shops, giving tips and ideas on where to shop the best.

Ukay-ukay or thrift shopping is basically buying secondhand clothes and accessories in stores for a very affordable price. For as low as P10, you can create unique outfits that don't look cheap at all. In a 2008 study, second-hand buying is described as, “the acquisition of used objects through often specific retail formats and places of exchange, both offline and online.”

Some of the notable content creators and influencers who love ukay-ukay are Shaira Luna, Chelsea Valencia, Laureen Uy, Mimiyuh, and more.

Aside from affordability being the main selling point as well as being able to create unique outfits you won't see on anybody else, thrift shopping can also help the save environment.

According to a study in 2020, “Fast fashion and short-lived styles have created a throwaway trend that results in negative environmental consequences.” The study further shares, “By 29 July 2019, the population of the world had used up the natural resources for a whole year.”

Take note, that was way back in 2019 and it's already 2022 right now. This is why we should be considering sustainable consumption.

According to the same study, sustainable consumption can be defined as “a holistic approach to minimizing the negative environmental impacts from consumption and production systems while promoting quality of life for all,” or, “consumption that entails a reduction of the adverse impact on the environment.”

When you look at it from this perspective, thrift shopping does have a positive impact on the environment as there are no natural resources used and wasted since you're reusing and recycling goods.

But since it's still the pandemic, it's totally valid to fear visiting physical ukay-ukay stores. Nevertheless, there are still ways to shop sustainably without having to go outside the confines of your home.

Here we've rounded up some of the online ukay-ukay thrift shops you can check out on Instagram if you don't want to go out just yet but want to help save the environment.
