GMA Kapuso Foundation braves blockade for towns in La Union

Foreign are the words ‘isolated’ and ‘distant’ to the GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) as they went against heavy rains and strong winds to extend assistance to two isolated areas in La Union last Tuesday (July 6).Land erosion, big rocks, trees snapped in half and toppled down electric posts flanked both sides of the road in towns nearby Bangar, one of the remote areas visited by the foundation.

The 8-hour drive from Manila to the province was not of value to the happiness radiated by the citizens as they received goods prepared by the GMAKF, whilst telling stories of desperation for access to food and supplies. Four sectors from a barangay of Bangar reported having no access to potable water.

In Bacnotan (another town of La Union), four hanging bridges in Brgy. Guinabang were wrecked by Typhoon Egay, leaving behind hundreds of families with no access to their homes and supplies. One of these bridges was formerly used by students to come to school.

One of the locals helped by the foundation, Josephine Valmonte, recounted her anguish as her two daughters (16 and 2 years of age) were left on the other side of the river during the onslaught of Typhoon Egay. Much to her despair, their home was damaged by the calamity. Logs and soil brought about by the flood filled her house, burying clothes, documents and other belongings of the family.

Juanita Pascua, another beneficiary, was lost for words for her entire house was swept away by the typhoon and her crops buried deep.

Taking on rivers by boat and by foot, the GMA Kapuso Foundation served and was one with 4, 000 individuals from La Union in their endeavors.
