What happened last August 1, 1898, and why should it be important for Filipinos to know
We know that last June 12, 1898, former president Emilio Aguinaldo declared our freedom and independence from the Spaniards who invaded our country for more than 300 years. But did you know that we weren't officially free on that day?
According to Ian Christopher Alfonso, history researcher II from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, our freedom was only officially sealed last August 1, 1898. Despite gathering a lot of people at the house of Aguinaldo last June 12, 1898, to wave our flag, the document that proved our freedom was still in the works.

The Acta de Independencia, a document that Apolinario Mabini initiated which officially sealed our liberation from the Spaniards, was only approved on August 1, 1898.
