I Juander: Learn about the gumihan fruit

In a recent episode of I Juander, hosts and veteran journalists Susan Enriquez and Kuya Kim Atienza discover the wonders of the exotic fruits that can be found in the country such as magic fruit and lipote.

Another fruit they discovered is gumihan. It looks like a bigger rambutan and it is consumed like an atis. Gumihan, scientifically known as artocarpus sericicarpus, grows in countries such as Borneo, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

In Malilipot, Albay, residents like Richard Bitago who plants gumihan, utilize every part of the fruit even its seeds. In a pan, he sautés the gumihan seeds until the skin gets burned. Once done, he munches on them like nuts.

But consuming gumihan also comes with a multitude of health benefits. Beatrice Fuentes, a nutritionist, confirms that gumihan can help with high blood pressure. She shares, “Ang gumihan fruit is also known as athlete's fruit. Its composition is very similar to a banana. It is rich in vitamin A, B, E, calcium, and iron so very nutritious po ito sa katawan.”
