Julie Anne San Jose shows she is truly limitless as netizens praised her performance as Maria Clara.

Netizens could not help but praise Kapuso actress Julie Anne San Jose for an amazing performance in the “kumbento o kamatayan” scene in the hit fantasy portal series Maria Clara at Ibarra.

In the January 17 episode of the series, Maria Clara (Julie Anne) just found out that her fiance, Crisostomo Ibarra (Dennis Trillo), has died in a fire. She is then visited by Padre Damaso (Tirso Cruz III), saying that she should not wallow in grief and marry Alfonso Linares (Brent Valdez) instead.

However, Maria Clara did not agree to marry Alfonso and asked the friar instead to let her join the convent. While Padre Damaso, at first, did not agree with her decision, she did not give him much choice as Maria said that she would only choose either joining the convent or her death.

Viewers then took to Twitter to express how amazing and great actress Julie is in the scene and how she deserves the role of Maria Clara.

Another user added her acting showed “the diff[erent] stages of grief” and made viewers feel “a roller coaster of emotions.”

“'Yung sakit, galit at poot. Applause, madam @MyJaps You owned the episode tonight,” they added.

In an interview with Nelson Canlas on “Chika Minute” on January 18, the Limitless Star admitted that Maria Clara is her favorite role so far.

“It has not been easy for me portraying the role pero ito by far 'yung pinaka favorite role ko sa buong acting career ko,” she said.

She added, “Humbling experience siya for me because aside from working with very talented people--talented actors and very passionate writers from the whole team, ibang klaseng experience kasi siya talaga for me.”

Meanwhile, in an interview on The Howie Severino Podcast, series writer Suzette Doctolero said that they “tweaked” Maria Clara's character a bit and made her more courageous. However, she clarified that while most people perceive the character as “weak” and “submissive” in the novel, she actually is not.

“'Yung desisyon niya na kamatayan o kumbento, na kahit ang pinaka-makapangyarihang prayle ay walang magawa sa kanya,” Suzette said as an example of her courageousness.

She added that because the character already showed this courage in the original novel, they were able to expand on it and add scenes to elevate and empower the character.

“I don't think ikakagalit ni Rizal 'yun dahil nandu-doon pa rin 'yung character ni Maria Clara e. Inangat lang namin,” she added.
