Kuwento niya, "The melody itself was composed in 1988 to a poem written by my good friend Chari Cruz-Zarate, Ang Tubig Ay Buhay, which she used as a high school Jubilee song. So, I wrote that melody and I never thought that two years later I was going to use that melody for Christmas song."

Then, I thought of that melody and I got a friend of mine Rina Cañiza to come to the house, I gave her the melody and together we worked on the lyrics."

Aniya, " As a matter of fact, the producer sa Universal Records said, 'Jo, masyadong Christian song itong kanta. Why did you come up with a romantic Christmas song." So, I came out with 'My idea for a perfect Christmas is to spend it with you.' And then, when they heard, ''Yun, that's the one radio will play.' Without expecting that 'Christmas In Our Hearts' would be a big hit."

Sinagot ni Jose Mari Chan ang tanong ni Boy Abunda kung kumikita nang malaki ang kompositor sa isang sikat na kanta. Sagot niya, "Not anymore because the technology has changed. Nobody buys records, nobody buys CDs, nobody buys cassettes anymore. So, we earn a little bit from Spotify, not too much. Also from endorsements and doing shows, that's all."
Advice to young musicians
Nagbigay ng payo si Jose Mari Chan para sa mga kabataang musikero "Especially now with the technology change, it's very hard to live on music. That's why my advice to young composers, young singers is to use that as a hobby on the side but get another career--either in law, or accounting, or medicine. Just do music on the side. Don't lose it completely because that's God's given gift to you."
