Leandro Alcuar owns Bessie’s Garden and Restaurant. Just like any other father, Leandro longs for a child but, unfortunately, his wife Bessie, cannot give him one.
Supporting their business and living with them is Bessie's cousin Ofelia Almazan. Because of her husband’s death, Ofelia single-handedly raised her daughter Lizzie. Ofelia devoted her life to Lizzie who unfortunately dies too soon.
Making things more complicated is Janet Perez. She has her eyes set on Leandro because of his looks and hiswealth. She believes that if she gives Leandro a child, he will leave Bessie for her. To this end, she gets him drunk one night to take advantage of him.
When she was about to tell Leandro the news that she is pregnant, Janet finds out that Bessie is also pregnant. There is no way Leandro will ever leave Bessie now. In memory of Ofelia’s daughter, Bessie will name her child Lizzie.
Janet decides to go abroad and leaves her child Lara together with a letter, in front of the Alcuar house. Ofelia who first sees Lara and reads Janet’s letter. She decides to keep the truth from Leandro. Longing for a child, Ofelia keeps Lara and moves back to the province.
As the children grow up, Bessie lets slip that Lara is adopted. The child asks Ofelia about this but Ofelia continues to pretend that she does not know who her biological parents are. This only makes Lara love Ofelia more. But it drives between a wedge between the two mothers.
In a sudden twist of fate, Leandro figures in a car accident that ultimately kills Lizzie.
Then Janet, now married to a rich Japanese businessman, comes back and tries to get Lara back.
