Jules Katanyag on Pauline Mendoza: "This girl is now a star!"

'Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat' director Jules Katanyag got the chance to shoot scenes with Pauline Mendoza back in 'Kambal, Karibal.' Find out what working with the promising drama actress again is like, HERE:

GMA Network is set to showcase another heart-wrenching drama series on the Afternoon Prime block beginning February 22 featuring the most promising and brightest actors and actresses in show business.

Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat tells the story of a young woman, Iris, whose perfect life is upended with the return of her father's original family.

The titular role of Iris will be portrayed by GMA Artist Center beauty Pauline Mendoza and joining her in this exciting project are Carmina Villarroel, Tanya Garcia-Lapid, Kristoffer Martin, Dave Bornea, Manolo Pedrosa, and John Estrada, to name few.

This drama series is directed by Jules Katanyag, who worked closely with the creative team to polish the story and deliver a one-of-a-kind soap that televiewers will enjoy.

During the grand media conference of Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat on February 9, the entertainment press got the chance to interview the cast and Direk Jules about their show.

In his interview with GMANetwork.com, Katanyag recalled their lock-in taping experience in Batangas and revealed that he likes the current setup for shooting soaps now amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

He told GMANetwork.com, “May pros and cons 'yung both na process, since ito 'yung first and nag-aadjust pa sa pandemic, may learning curve pa talaga and bagong-bago talaga 'yung process medyo na-shock din 'yung system.”

Pauline is set to play her first lead role in 'Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat', while Carmina Villarroel will portray the kontrabida Dulce / Photos taken from Jules Katanyag's Instagram account

“Pero since 'yung mga collaborators ko with the leadership of our EP Miss Nieva [Magpayo] and Sir Anthony [Pastorpide] and of course 'yung husay and talent ng mga actors and the crew, nalagpasan naman and na-achieve naman 'yung mga dapat namin na ma-achieve.”

He added, “I like this setup, pero siguro 'pag mas okey na 'yung learning curve… siguro 'pag ginawa siya ulit mas okey na siya, mas kayang-kaya na siya.

“Mas mapapaghandaan mo na din mentally--kasi iba din 'yung nakakulong ka, tapos may signal problems pa. Disconnected ka sa mundo, may mental health aspect [na] you have to deal with that din. So crucial din 'yung mga kasama n'yo 'tsaka preparations.”

“Maganda din 'yung [lock-in taping] nakukulong kayo dun sa mundo na 'yun and mas nafi-feel n'yo 'yung story. That's priceless din.”

Working with Pauline and Carmina

Aside from the bigger role of Pauline Mendoza in Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat, drama lovers will be curious to see how Carmina Villarroel would flesh out her role as a kontrabida in the series.

For Jules Katanyag, who was able to work with Pauline in a few scenes in her past soap Kambal Karibal, he noted that the young actress really blossomed in portraying Iris.

“'Yung experience na 'to to work with her right now and looking at her now, nakita ko talaga 'yung pag-bloom niya [and] pag-blossom niya.

“Medyo ninenerbyos siya nung simula, napansin ko pa 'yung may slight insecurity pa siya sa simula, dahil sa nerves, kasi first lead role niya.

“And right now, when I look at her, 'Oh My God this girl is now a star!'

“And that makes me feel so happy and proud to see that.”

Direk Jules also mentioned that he's thrilled for Kapuso viewers to see Carmina out of her comfort zone.

He added that during their one-month shooting for Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat, he saw how well she studied her role as Dulce.

Katanyag shared, “Isa ito sa first sa mga [time] na nag-play si Miss Carmina ng kontrabida role.

“At medyo sobra siya nanibago lalo na as written doon sa script, medyo mas 'black' 'yung character niya,"

“So we really had put in effort and some character work para mabigyan ng dimension 'yung character niya, para magkaroon pa rin ng puso and si Miss Mina inaaral nang mabuti 'yung character niya to make sure na [maganda].

“She's that kind of actor and I could say na parang most of the actors here may kanya-kanya silang approach, e. They delivered naman in all their respective roles.”
