By Kristian Eric Javier
'The Way You Look at Me' is also the song that catapulted Christian Bautista to fame in Indonesia.

In the 20 years that Asia's Romantic Balladeer Christian Bautista has been in the industry, one of the most famous songs that propelled him to stardom is “The Way You Look at Me.” This song is very dear to the singer's heart which is why he named his upcoming 20th anniversary concert after it.

In his interview in the Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast, Christian shared a brief history of his famous single, saying that it was initially offered to him after he auditioned then in Warner Music.

“Nag-audition ako back then sa Warner Music--ngayon nasa Universal Records na ako--ng Josh Groban song, kasi Warner used to [be the label of] Josh Groban at 'yon ang kinakanta ko sa singing contest, a Josh Groban song,” he said.

He revealed that after he auditioned, he felt that he didn't make the cut because the judges at the time were not giving him positive feedback.

“Parang nag-iisip pa lang sila 'Hmm...okay thank you sige..we'll let you know we'll call you,'” he added.

After a month, the singer-actor was offered to do a song that, according to the music label, has been with them for a long time. “Hindi lang alam kung kanino ibibigay na artist,” he shared.

“I guess may nakita silang future somehow and in-offer sa akin 'yong song na 'The Way You Look At Me' after siguro a month or after a few weeks. And then nung narinig ko nga, 'Wow! Ang ganda nito,'” he recalled.

The song was written by American composers Andrew Fromm and Keith Follese. Christian released the song in his self-titled album in 2004 and received frequent airplay on local radio stations and also the Indonesian airwaves. Because of this sone, his fan base grew in Indonesia.

Fame in Indonesia

Aside from the Philippines, Christian was also largely famous in Indonesia.

Christian recalled that when he was with Warner Music, the label was choosing which artists they could launch in other countries. According to him, Indonesians loved Filipino artists, especially veteran singer Jose Mari Chan.

The music label was impressed with Chirstian and his new single so "they took a risk.”

“Nag-risk sila sa radio stations muna, and then nag-work. And then nag-invest sa concerts, and then road shows,” he said.

He added that the response in the country was so great that it resulted in a second concert and album, as well as a second single that was only released in Indonesia.

“It's also such a blessing,” he added.
