KMJS: Manny Pacquiao, Nedal Hussein talk about the alleged cheating incident

By Kristian Eric Javier
Amid the Carlos Padilla, Jr. controversy, Manny Pacquiao and Nedal Hussein discuss the possibility of doing an exhibition fight.

Pinoy boxing champ Manny Pacquiao says that he's willing to investigate his year 2000 fight against Nedal Hussein after referee Carlos Padilla Jr. admitted that he prolonged the count on a downed Pacquiao to give him extra time to recover.

In the December 4 episode of Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho, Manny said in the interview that he was surprised by Carlos' statement about the long count or prolonging the count on a downed boxer and reviewed the fight.

"We're just doing our job in the ring. I think the WBC will investigate again and review the fight and will announce after their investigation,” he said during the interview.

He admitted, however, that upon his review, he did not see anything unusual with how Carlos did his job as a referee.

“Yes, naalala ko, tama lang 'yung bilang niya. At five, six, pag count niya ng six, tumayo na ako,” he said.

He added that as boxers, they're only doing their job in the ring and that there are no “dirty tactics” that they use to gain an advantage during the fight.

Nedal, meanwhile, admitted that he became frustrated with Carlos for “doing everything to help Manny, not to help me.”

However, he clarified that he doesn't have anything against Manny.

“My problem was with Carlos Padilla from the start and the WBC. Nothing to do with you. You're just a victim like me,” he said.

In an interview, Carlos said that when counting for Manny who was knocked down by Hussein during the fight, he prolonged the count to give Manny enough time.

“I'm a Filipino and everybody's a Filipino [sic] watching the fight, so I prolonged the count,” he said.

However, in a statement, Suzy Padilla, Carlos' daughter, defended her father by saying that despite living in the US for decades, English remains her dad's second language, adding how communication and well-intentioned words can be misinterpreted.

“My father is a decent and honorable man. He dedicated his life to boxing and boxers and cared for them and their well-being regardless of nationality or circumstance,” she added.

Sports analyst Joaquin Henson meanwhile, said that after reviewing the fight numerous times, he concluded that there was no cheating that happened during the fight.

“I reviewed the fight over and over again and I must say, walang anomalya whatsoever sa laban. Manny Pacquiao deserved to win that fight by a TKO in the 10th round,” he added.

Before the segment ended, Jessica Soho asked the two boxers, "Are you guys on good terms?"

"I am a big fan of Manny. All boxers have respect for the other boxer," Nedal reiterated.

He even extended the possibility of an exhibition match, to which Manny agreed.

“I haven't been in the ring since 2007. I'd love to do it against Manny. You let me know, give me three months,” he said.

Meanwhile, Manny admitted that in small promotions, cheating can happen from time to time.

“May mga instance na may ganun, hindi naman palagi pero may mga pangyayaring ganun sa maliliit na promotion. Nag-babayad, napapasukan ng mga sindikato,” he said.
