Jaya thanks Kris Aquino for inviting her to sing at PNoy's funeral mass

By Bong Godinez
The singer performed a classic OPM tune popularized by Celeste Legaspi.

Saturday, June 26, was a solemn day as the country bade farewell to former president Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

The country's 15th president, who passed away on Thursday, June 24, due to renal disease secondary to diabetes, was laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque.

But before that, a funeral mass was staged at the Church of the Gesú inside the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City.

The mass also included performances by celebrity singers, making the occasion even more poignant especially to people who are close to the late former president.

One of the performances that caught the attention of many was that of Jaya, who sang one of Noynoy's all-time favorite songs according to sister Kris Aquino.

Jaya sang the Celeste Legaspi classic, “Minsan ang Minahal ay Ako.”

“The whole of last night, while we were in Heritage, hinahanap ng staff there's one song in particular that Noy had been listening to over and over again, and I was told that it was his favorite," Kris said.

And I think we spent three hours trying to research the song, it was originally done by Celeste Legazpi but it was the Aiza Seguerra version that Noy had liked so much."

Nobody knows exactly why Noynoy loved the song or whether it had a significant meaning on his life personally or professionally as a politician.

Jaya, for her part, expressed gratitude to the Aquino family for inviting her to perform in the service.

“Napakasaya ko na naawitan po kayo kanina. Paborito nyo pala ang awit na Minsan ang Minahal ay Ako. At marami po ang nagmamahal sa inyo,” wrote Jaya on Instagram.

“Nang dahil din sa iyo @krisaquino, I had the honor of singing for your brother. Thank you so much. May God grant your family peace and comfort. Paalam po, Sir.”
