Jewel Mische's star continues to shine as she lands the role of Jenny in Carlo J. Caparas' Kamandag.
StarStruck: The Next Level's Ultimate Sweetheart Jewel Mische has definitely come a long way after her days in GMA's celebrated talent search. From being the audiences' popular choice among the batch's contenders to becoming Luming in the fantasy-themed series, Magic Kamison, she is now one of the leading ladies of the country's most-wanted primetime actors, Richard Gutierrez. "Never kong na-imagine, never kong naisip [na makasama sila]" said the awed teen actress in an interview with iGMA during the show's photo shoot."It's a very sweet reward (and) I feel so flattered and honored" she added.
Jewel first caught Richard's attention from way back her days in
StarStruck, and she has eventually become the matinee idol's
personal
pick for a leading lady. Like other ladies Richard has worked with, she also speaks highly of everyone's favorite leading man. "I'm very happy" she admits. "Masaya siyang ka-trabaho, maasikaso [at] tinutulungan niya 'yung mga kailangan niyang tulungan, like me, sa mga eksena."
The Kamandag Project
Now starring in
Kamandag, Jewel plays Jenny, a "Manila girl na mapapadpad sa barrio nina Vergel (
Richard Gutierrez )." Far from the stereotyped rich kids who arrive in a foreign land with a proud air around them, Jenny is charming, sweet and kind - and that is why Jewel finds it challenging to give life to her.
"Kasi normally, kapag ganitong mga soap, 'yung mayaman, 'yung Manila girl, 'yun 'yung kontra-bida, maarte" she says. "Pero dito hindi. Challenging siya for me (kasi kailangan) maging consistent na sosyal ako pero mabait."
Since its introduction,
Kamandag has been related to snakes - the scaly and slithery reptiles that are often feared by most people. In fact, most of the cast has already expressed a degree of fear to these slithering props. Unfortunately for them, most of the characters in the show have to deal with these creatures. But this is no problem for Jewel, who claims to be unafraid of snakes.
"I don't love them but I don't hate them" she says with a giggle, and shares that she used to have a pet snake in elementary. "It's okay for me [to hold them]. Hindi po ako takot. Nae-excite nga ako eh. They say [that] advantageous daw po sa'kin 'yun, siguro po [kasi] . hindi kakailanganin ng maraming takes" she adds.
Constant Improvement

Jewel is already aware of the industry's demands despite her being a novice. Determined to meet people's expectations, she admits to undergoing workshops for her constant improvement. "I've had workshops before, pero ngayon, one-on-one workshops [na] and mas focused. I [also] keep on reading my script, gumagawa rin ako ng research and observations [of the people] na kailangan kong i-portray" she says.
The young star also understands that every character needs a different attack, so she "steps out of her self" to be the person the role requires. "[There has to be] dedication and focus and love for my character. And kahit challenging siya, I have to enjoy it."
Eager and excited for her latest project, Jewel encourages all her fans and supporters to catch a whole new her. "This is my first primetime [show]. Araw-araw [na] nila akong makikita [and] it's different doon sa lahat ng ginampanan kong roles before. Nandoon 'yung comedy, suspense at maraming sweet moments" she says.
