What else is there to expect from the Filipino spin-off of TOEI’s popular metal hero series “Shaider”? Read on to find out! Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos courtesy of GMA Network. For anyone who grew up in the early ‘90s, Shaider is a household name. But for those who are clueless on who the metal hero is, fret not because iGMA is here to give you the lowdown on who’s who and what’s what! From Shaider to Zaido starsBack in the early ‘80s, Shaider premiered in Japan as the story of a warrior who must fight the forces of Kuuma Le-Ar, a malevolent being intent on conquering the universe. With the help of his faithful assistant and two other metal heroes from different planets, they were able to rid the world of the Kuumas. And the series ended with the three metal heroes, each going back to the lives they led before they became protectors of the universe but always on call for when the dark forces return. Twenty years later, the forces of Kuuma Le-Ar are back, and he is intent on fulfilling the mission he failed to complete before. But the metal heroes of old are gone, and it’s time for a new breed of superheroes to fill in their shoes. The Zaidos are born -- three special individuals who share one unique and important trait: the bloodline of Shaider. “Matagal na naming binubuo (ang show na ito),” Wilma Galvante, GMA Network Senior Vice President for Entertainment, revealed to the press last September 17. She, together with some of the production staff of the show, said that ever since the success of GMA’s previous telefantasyas, they have been looking for the next big thing to do. Enter Zaido. All Systems Go! Acquiring the rights to air the show was a long but enjoyable process, noted Ms. Galvante. “We learned a lot from them.” starsThe company that owns Shaider turned down the proposal for a remake of the show, but they agreed in having GMA come up with its own spin-off of the popular series. What should’ve been a cause for concern became a cause of celebration when the production team realized that they’re no longer bound to what the old series had done. “Mas mapapalago (namin) ang istorya,” added the GMA executive. And so Zaido was born. Instead of having one main star, Shaider, the series had three Zaidos instead. Avenues of stories opened up and more interesting characters surfaced. But being a copyrighted material, everything had to go through the copyright owners first – “from the writers, to the director, to the actors… lahat kailangan um-oo,” she noted. Yet the production team was undaunted. In her final statement during the press conference, Ms. Galvante stressed, “Ang gusto naming mangyari, we have to improve ourselves every time.” Zaido, Pulis Pangkalawakan Dennis Trillo top bills the new Telebabad offering, but he doesn’t mind sharing the spotlight with Marky Cielo and Aljur Abrenica as well. He is just grateful that his projects are always better than the last. “Napaka-privileged (ko),” Dennis shared. stars“Malaking pasasalamat sa malaking tiwala,” were what Marky and Aljur had to say for being part of the project. And Raymart Santiago, who returns to primetime with a very important character, just had one thing to say, “Sana ma-enjoy nyo.” People noted the big ensemble cast and wondered how the production team and the writing team plan on showcasing each and every one of them. Program Manager Redgynn Alba promised that the production knows what it is doing. “Lahat sila, may papel na gagampanan. As we go along, makikita niyo kung bakit.” Most of the cast will be doing telefantasya for the first time, prompting Tirso Cruz III to joke that it was his first time too -- to work with Director Dominic Zapata. But none of the cast members were worried. After all, they’ll certainly be giving their best for the project and are willing to embrace the challenge.
