High profile libel complaints in Philippine showbiz

The topic of libel has become buzzworthy in the Philippine entertainment industry lately due to several high profile libel complaints from big stars against veteran showbiz writers.

Actress Bea Alonzo who filed cyber libel complaints against controversial personalities Cristy Fermin and Ogie Diaz, as well as their co-hosts in their respective online programs.

Megastar Sharon Cuneta and her husband, former senator Kiko Pangilinan, also lodged cyber libel complaints against Cristy Fermin.

The Cornell Law School defines libel as "a method of defamation expressed by print, writing, pictures, signs, effigies, or any communication embodied in physical form that is injurious to a person's reputation; exposes a person to public hatred, contempt or ridicule; or injures a person in their business or profession."

Libel has four elements: a defamatory statement, malice, publication, and identifiability of the victim.

Due to the changing nature of media, platforms of publication have been expanded to include non-traditional media. Defamatory statements made in social media, blogs, websites, and other electronic platforms now fall under cyber libel.
