SHINee, composed of Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin, debuted on May 25, 2008 and will be celebrating their 16th anniversary this year.
KNOW MORE ABOUT THEM HERE:
SHINee
SHINee is a contemporary RnB boy group founded by SM Entertainment that debuted on May 25, 2008. Their name is derived from the coined word βshine,β meaning light, and the suffix ee, which meant βthe one who receives light.β
Princes of K-pop
Before the group's debut, SM Entertainment's goal for SHINee is to be trendsetters in music, fashion, and dance, with five members, namely: Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin.
Onew
Lee Jin-ki, otherwise known as Onew, is the leader and lead vocalist of SHINee. He is known for his distinguishable caramel voice that gives the boy band's music its magnetic charm.
Because he is the oldest member, bandmate Key would sometimes call him βyoungam,β meaning old man. He takes this nickname to the next level as his Instagram handle, βdlstmxkakwldrl,β literally means βInsta old man.β
Key
Kim Ki-bum, better known by his stage name Key, is not only a singer and an actor, but he's also a fashion designer, television presenter, and (probably) the sassiest member of SHINee. Key is not afraid to make fun of his members and is known for his devilish laugh.
Key is also considered one of the best-dressed men in his country, thanks to his peculiar style to the point that he's even compared to G-Dragon. There was even a time where news reporters would gather around him to see what designer items he is currently donning. According to Key, βThe important thing is not to be bound by style, but one's attitude when it comes to fashion.β
Minho
Flaming charisma Choi Min-ho, or Minho, is known for his unparalleled competitiveness in sports, especially soccer. Minho used this to his advantage when he was asked to participate in the Idol Star Athletics Championships, where he won Most Valuable Player in 2011 thanks to his three gold medals.
Have we mentioned that he's also good looking? In 2017, he even upstaged Melania Trump after two South Korean girls had burst into screaming when they saw the sight of Minho in front of the US First Lady.
Taemin
If there's one thing to describe Lee Tae-min, it's that he is incredibly gifted. Having debuted at only 14 years old, Taemin has an enigmatic stage presence that only he can deliver. Despite this, his real-life persona is definitely far from it as he is the group's maknae and loves to be mischievous around his older members.
Being a main-multiplayer or βmamu,β his artistic impact has led him to be called the βIdol's Idolβ thanks to his successful solo career and being part of SM Entertainment's supergroup, SuperM. Don't believe us? Try searching for βMove,β βDanger,β βWant,β and βFamous.β
Jonghyun
This list would not be complete without vocalist and songwriter Kim Jong-hyun, responsible for writing some of the group's most successful songs, including their fourth Korean single, βJuliette.β
Aside from his impact on the music industry, Jonghyun is also not afraid to stand up to the oppressed. In 2013, he supported the LGBTQ+ community when he reached out to a bisexual and transgender college student in Korea who spotlighted the discrimination based on sexuality. He even wrote on his Twitter account, βbeing different doesn't mean it's wrong.β
Replay
On May 22, 2008, SHINee released their Extended Play (EP) βReplay,β and its debut song βNoona Neomu Yeppeo (Replay)," a contemporary, sophisticated RnB track. The debut single turned into a hit, especially with the adult female demographic because of the line βNuna (older sister), you're so pretty.β
SHINee trend
Aside from music, the group gained attention for starting a fashion trend among students, which the media dubbed as the βSHINee Trend.β The look is all thanks to Korean fashion designer Ha Sang-beg, who is the name behind their contemporary looks in music videos like βJuliette,β βReplay,β βRing Ding Dong,β βLucifer,β and so much more.
Ring Ding Dong
In 2009, SHINee gained wide attention after releasing their single βRing Ding Dongβ from their third Extended Play, β2009, Year of Us.β The track βRing Ding Dongβ is an afro-electro song which describes a situation of unconsciously falling in love with someone. The catchy phrase is a cartoon-like expression for a bell ringing in someone's head at the very moment of falling in love.
Best Dance Performance Awards
SHINee is known for their peerless choreography that can be attributed to working with only the world's top choreographers, including Rino Nakasone, Tony Testa, Misha Gabriel, and Ian Eastwood. In fact, their choreography for βSherlock,β βDream Girl,β and βViewβ were awarded the Best Dance Performance Award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in 2012, 2013, and 2015, respectively.
From Now On
In 2017, SHINee experienced their darkest moment when vocalist Jonghyun passed away in December. Nearly two months after his burial, SHINee pushed through with their scheduled concert in Japan as a four-member group. During the concert, they performed the Japanese single βFrom Now On,β which featured Jonghyun's voice, and the audience saw the four members grieving on stage.
Best Live Vocal Group
In the span of their 12-year career in the K-pop industry, SHINee is considered as one of the best live vocal groups thanks to their multi-talented members. In fact, Kim Joo-hyun of Beff Report emphasized the harmony between Onew and Jonghyun, saying that the two voices compliment each other when brought together.
Experimental sound
Despite being a contemporary RnB group, SHINee is also known for their more experimental sound and various genres with every release. Their single βEverybodyβ proved that as the track found a delicious balance of EDM and K-pop.
Dance Videos
Did you know that even before dance practice videos were a thing, it was SHINee who paved the way for that? Try checking out their dance practice for βLucifer,β taken from the old SM Entertainment performance room.
Emoticons
SHINee fans know that the members have their own emoticon that represents them. Here's a breakdown of each of the members' emoticon: Onew: ^β½^, Jonghyun: γ γ γ , Key: `γ Β΄, Minho: γ _γ , and Taemin 6v6. Which one is your favorite?
Success in Japan
Before their debut in 2011 in Japan, SM Entertainment exposed the boys to the Japanese market through their Asian tours and releasing Japanese versions of their albums.
As a result, in 2015, SHINee performed at the Tokyo Dome, where they accumulated over 700,000 fans singing to their tracks.
Taemin as a soloist
As we mentioned earlier, Taemin is one gifted idol. To prove a point, Taemin is SM's first soloist from an existing group. In an interview for iHeartRadio, Taemin said, βMy solo debut was something out of the ordinary from my company because no one has ever released a solo album, and I was the very first. To be debuting as a soloist while being active in a group, I am the first to do so. I was surprised myself, too. I didn't expect myself to be releasing a solo album this fast."
Solo songs
Like the vocalists that they all are, SHINee members Onew, Key, Minho, and Jonghyun also released solo songs. Onew released his first mini album titled βVoiceβ in 2018 with the lead single βBlue.β The same year, Key produced his first album βFaceβ with the lead track βOne of Those Nights.β Meanwhile, Minho dropped his first solo in March 2019 with the song βI'm Home.β Prior to his passing, Jonghyun worked on his music with his second solo album βStory Op.2.β
Acting prowess
Aside from music, these multi-talented group also ventured into acting. Most especially member Minho who starred alongside Park Seo-joon in the drama βHwarang: The Poet Warrior Youthβ in 2016.
Obama's shoutout
Former US President Barack Obama mentioned the K-pop group in his speech at the Asian Leadership Conference. He said, βFamous movies are being filmed in Korea. Young people in the U.S. learn Korean so they can understand SHINee.β
Multilingual
SHINee members are very fluent in many languages, including Japanese, English, and Chinese. Though, out of all the members, it is Key who is good at speaking and learning foreign languages thanks to his brief stint abroad.
Onew as a teacher
During their trainee days, maknae Taemin would often stand close to Onew so he could learn how to sing. They said that they would often go to the rooftop together so Onew could give vocal lessons to Taemin -- only learning from the best
Talk while asleep
While the members have their own quirks, what links all of the members together is that they talk when they're asleep!
Military Hiatus
SHINee started their military hiatus after leader Onew applied for his mandatory military service in December 2018. The following year, both Key and Minho also enlisted, leaving maknae Taemin to pursue his solo career and debut as a member of SuperM.
Shawol
SHINee wouldn't be where they are if it wasn't for their unwavering fans called Shawols, a portmanteau of the words SHINee and World, and is represented by the fandom color of pearl aqua.
SHINee members also have their individual fandoms. The group MVPs are for Onew, derived from one of his lines in βReplay,β Blingers are for Jonghyun, Flamers are for Minho, Lockets are for Key, and Taemints are for Taemin.
SHINee's back, back, back
After two years, Onew, Key, and Minho have finished their military service, prompting fans to say that SHINee is officially back! Immediately after Minho's discharge, SHINee went live on Key's Instagram Story to mark their return to the K-pop industry.
With the return of SHINee in the music industry, we're sure fans can't wait to hear what the group has in store for everyone.
2021 comeback
During the SMTOWN "Culture Humanity" concert on January 1, 2021, it was officially announced that SHINee will be making a comeback this year. The group will be dropping major spoilers about their upcoming album via a special broadcast titled 'The Ringtone: SHINee is back' on January 31 on their YouTube and V Live channels.
Marry You
Raising more anticipation for their comeback, SHINee revealed the B-side track for their upcoming studio album titled βMarry You,β a romantic pop ballad that talks about the singer's intention to marry the love of his life.
Minho's request
During the live broadcast, SHAWOLs theorized that SHINee's upcoming single would be titled βDon't Call Me,β which was initially given to legendary K-pop singer BoA. However, she later rejected it because it sounded like it was made for a group. In the same show, member Minho asked if SHINee could have one of the rejected songs.
Don't Call Me
The following day, it was confirmed that SHINee's upcoming title track would be βDon't Call Meβ and is slated to be released on February 22.
Japan comeback
Three years after the release of 'Sunny Side,' SHINee made their Japan comeback in 2021 via 'SUPERSTAR.' It also coincided with their 10th debut anniversary in the said country. The serotonin-inducing music video was released on June 29, while the physical album was available for purchase on July 28.
Pilot show kings
SHINee members are sometimes referred to as pilot show kings, as they are usually the guests of a new show's first episode. In an appearance in Weekly Idol, Jonghyun shared, "In SM, SHINee is in charge of opening ways for artists to programs. SHINee comes first to programs that need inspections.β
