Gladys Reyes challenged by Brillante Mendoza's directing style
Gladys Reyes deserves her recent best actress award at the first Summer Metro Manila Film Festival after playing a very challenging role in Brillante Mendoza's film titled Apag.
In an interview on Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel podcast, Gladys related that aside from the cooking she's done in the movie, she was challenged the most in acting without following any script.
“That's how Direk Brilyante works, e, hindi siya naka-rely sa script,” she said.
“Bago talaga sa 'kin ito because in my almost four decades in the industry, ngayon lang ako nakaranas ng ganun na sasabihin 'yung sitwasyon sa'yo and then, you improvise, 'Ano 'yung sasabihin ng character mo kung ito 'yung sitwasyon?'”
She added, “Iga-guide ka naman niya kung tama 'yung sasabihin mo, kung tama 'yung dialogue mo. Kung hindi, iga-guide ka rin niya again.”
Gladys also said that all they had was a sequence guide during the filming of the movie, but there's no dialogue that they can read or refer to.
“Kaya kinakailangan talaga mabilis 'yung pick-up, kinakailangan naiintindihan mo 'yung character mo,” she said.
Apag is one of the eight movies that premiered in the 1st Summer Film Festival held on April 8 -18, with the awards night held on April 11. Gladys plays the role of Nita, the housekeeper of the Tuazon family composed of Coco Martin, Jaclyn Jose, and Senator Lito Lapid.
Aside from this, Gladys also appeared in another Summer Film Festival movie, playing the role of Salve in Here Comes the Bride, a comedy film starring Enching Dee, Maris Racal, and Keempee de Leon, who won the Best Supporting Actor award, among others.
Here, she compared Direk Brillante to their director Chris Martinez, who is very particular and did not want them to make too much change on their script.
