Maxene Magalona advocates more discussions on mental health
Maxene Magalona is committed to share her struggle with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) in order to advocate good conversations about mental health issues.
Maxene has opened up about getting diagnosed with C-PTSD earlier this year, and she was driven by this personal experience to promote mental health awareness.
She began her post with a reminder, saying, “Don't let your mind bully your body.”
She also said, “Sadly, mental health has become such a negative and taboo topic that no one really likes talking about it. Bringing up this stuff makes people feel uncomfortable and sometimes even upset. But to be honest, I really believe we need to talk about these things now more than ever so that those who may be going through the same thing as us can hopefully begin to understand what they're feeling or experiencing.”
Maxene identified that bullying is one of the main causes of C-PTSD.
She explained, saying, “One of the biggest causes of C-PTSD is repeated and prolonged trauma experienced in interpersonal relationships. One example of this is #bullying as this causes the victim to experience embarrassment, humiliation and even extreme fear. Especially when the bullying is experienced in childhood, the effects of trauma will be carried by the victim all the way into adulthood. This is why bullying is very harmful and detrimental.
“Now that it's #BullyingPreventionMonth, I hope we can all be mindful of the way we treat others. We may not know it but we may already be causing pain and suffering to others with bullying disguised as “jokes” or “sarcasm.” These will have a negative long-term psychological effect on the victim which can lead to anxiety, depression and even suicidal tendencies.”
Maxene also recommended victims of bullying to seek help and to turn to their faith.
She said, “If you or anyone you know may be experiencing this, please don't hesitate to ask for help. I also highly recommend praying to God when you're feeling helpless or alone as He continues to be my healer all throughout my healing journey.
“Bullies may come off as strong and powerful but truthfully, they are hurting inside and experiencing a huge amount of pain so I suggest praying for their own healing as well. It's about time that we all do our part in making this world a kinder, more harmonious and peaceful place.”
