Metro Manila mayors' effort to combat the spread of coronavirus
[Updated as of March 10, 2020) With the rise of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in Metro Manila, city mayors are galvanizing resources to combat the spread the disease. Check out their city mayors efforts in this gallery.
Quezon City
Mayor Joy Belmonte confirmed on March 10 that there at least three cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Quezon City. According to the last census in 2015, this mega city has over 2.93 million people.
Contact tracing
In an article published on GMA News Online, the Quezon City local government has started contact tracing for the 57 years old patient. Meanwhile, while a condominium unit in the Timog Avenue area where another COVID-19 case stayed have been disinfected already.
Pasig City
Pasig is one of the cities in Metro Manila with a confirmed case of COVID-19. The latest 2015 census figure shows that the city has a total population of more than 755,000.
Disinfection
Mayor Vico Sotto confirmed in a Facebook post yesterday, March 9, that one patient is confined at the Medical City, but the patient is not a resident of Pasig. On the other hand, another Pasig resident, who is also a COVID-19 patient, is confined outside the city. Mayor Sotto also added that the city government has implemented contact tracing, disinfecting public places, and canceling all public events and gatherings to prevent the spread of the disease.
Makati City
The financial district of the country has also implemented measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The city has a population of more than 582,000 based on the 2015 census.
Preventive measures
Mayor Abby Binay in a statement released on Facebook yesterday, March 9 has instructed the Makati Health Department (MHD) to do contact tracing for the Taiwanese national, who visited Makati City and later on turned positive for COVID-19. In addition, Mayor Binay has instructed the city's COVID-19 Task Force to make sure that all residents, visitors, and establishments in the city follow the preventive measures by the Department of Health (DOH) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, Mayor Binay assured the parents and students in Makati that all public schools and places have been disinfected too.
Manila
The nation's capital boasts a population of at least 1.78 million based on the 2015 census. On a Faceook post on March 9, Mayor Isko Moreno said that the city government is monitoring at least 14 patients under investigation (PUI)
Do not panic
As a precautionary measure, Mayor Isko Moreno cancelled classes in both private and public school in the city from March 9-15. He also asked his constituents “not to panic.” He said in a statement, "Stay at home, be observant, be vigilant… Bilang mamamayan meron din kayong responsibilidad sa inyong sarili, sa inyong kapitbahay, at sa mamamayan. Huwag munang gumala at manatili sa inyong mga bahay."
Taguig City
On March 7, the city of Taguig became hot topic online after consultancy and financial advisory firm Deloitte Philippines confirmed that one of its employees was tested positive from COVID-19. Taguig has a population of at least 804,000 based on the 2015 census.
Daily bulletins
In a statement published on his Facebook page, Mayor Lino Cayetano said that the citizens of Taguig will receive daily bulletins about COVID-19. In addition, the city government has issued some guidelines for establishments about sterilization and monitoring of people. He also encouraged his constituents to report COVID-19 cases via the hotline of the City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Office: 8789-3200 at 09664194510.
Parañaque
According to reports, one of the hospitals treating COVID-19 cases is the UniHealth Parañaque Hospital. The city of Parañaque has a population of over 665,000 (2015 Census).
Close monitoring
According to Mayor Olivarez, two persons (both are non-residents of Parañaque) who were confined at the Unihealth-Parañaque were transferred to Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) on Monday night, March 9. The city government has also implemented class suspension from March 10-14 in all levels.
