After almost a decade, John Eric Salvanera Gonzales, better known by his stage name Jeric Gonzales, is primed to leave his title as the “Ultimate Male Protégé.”
In 2012, the good-looking fellow from Laguna entered show business through season 2 of GMA’s reality based artista search, Protégé.
As the show sought to discover emerging talents who could be the next big stars, Jeric gave himself a chance to find out if he was meant for showbiz.
His journey to the top was no walk in the park. It was riddled with self-doubt and fears and disappointments and challenges.
In the Kapuso talent competition, Jeric was originally mentored by veteran actress and director Gina Alajar but due to some twist in the show, Jeric found himself being handed over to another mentor, Jolina Magdangal.
After going through a laborious selection process, Jeric eventually emerged victorious, bagging the “Ultimate Male Protégé” title. This sweet and unexpected victory instantly turned his life around.
Even if change was a challenging thing to do, especially for a young man who had nary an idea what the entertainment industry was like, Jeric taught himself to be patient and to open himself up to what his “new” world would offer.
Perhaps the reason for his apprehension during the early days of his showbiz career was that he was aware of his lack of skills in singing, dancing, and acting. He also knew that while his handsome face would make people notice, it would not be enough to get him roles and projects.
Despite this, Jeric soldiered on. He realized that if he let his insecurities get the better of him, he would not be able to move forward in his career. Instead of moping, Jeric chose to work hard--- harder than most of his peers.
Pausing briefly, the Kapuso actor recalls, “Ang hirap kasi, singing lang ’yung alam ko nung pumasok ako sa showbiz, banda, tugtog, and aside from that, wala na akong alam. ’Yung acting wala akong masyadong experience diyan. Sa hosting, wala talaga, pag-aaralan mo talaga siya. You will undergo workshops pa. Kailangan mong maging masipag.”
Jeric put in the long hours, observing and taking notes from the experienced actors around him. He made sure that before he arrived at the production set, he already knew his lines and the actors he'd be working with.
All the hard work was worth it. Jeric is proud that he didn't give up and that he kept trying and trying until he got things right.
“Ako, I am proud to say na isa yata ako sa pinakamasipag doon sa acting workshop, kahit tanungin n’yo pa ’yung mentor namin. Lahat yata, tiniyaga ko. Halos one year, workshop lang ako nang workshop. So, naappreciate ko naman ngayon na lahat ng pinagdaanan ko roon na… worth the wait.”
Over the years, Jeric learned that in order for him to stay afloat and relevant in this business, he must keep on improving. Having a love for the craft was not enough. One must have that hunger, that drive, that fire to make himself more bankable than the next guy.
Jeric's track record shows that he has both drive and hunger. Shortly after winning the grand prize in Protégé, he became part of GMA’s then Sunday noontime variety show Party Pilipinas. After this stint, he moved on to play different roles in many GMA shows.
In 2013, Jeric appeared as a guest in the hit Kapuso sitcom Pepito Manaloto and then later joined the cast of the drama thriller series, Love and Lies. After that, he portrayed the role of Eli Marasigan, the happy-go-lucky guy in the 2015 Philippine television drama series Pari ’Koy, which had Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes as its lead actor.
In 2016, Jeric took on the role of Vince in the groundbreaking afternoon drama series Destiny Rose, in which Ken Chan played a determined transwoman. From 2018 up to 2019, Jeric played the role of Brix, the son of Eloisa Lorenzo, the character portrayed by Jean Garcia in the hit GMA drama crime series, Ika-5 Utos.
