After almost a decade, John Eric Salvanera Gonzales, better known by his stage name Jeric Gonzales, is primed to leave his title as the “Ultimate Male Protégé.”

In 2012, the good-looking fellow from Laguna entered show business through season 2 of GMA’s reality based artista search, Protégé.

As the show sought to discover emerging talents who could be the next big stars, Jeric gave himself a chance to find out if he was meant for showbiz.

His journey to the top was no walk in the park. It was riddled with self-doubt and fears and disappointments and challenges.

In the Kapuso talent competition, Jeric was originally mentored by veteran actress and director Gina Alajar but due to some twist in the show, Jeric found himself being handed over to another mentor, Jolina Magdangal.

After going through a laborious selection process, Jeric eventually emerged victorious, bagging the “Ultimate Male Protégé” title. This sweet and unexpected victory instantly turned his life around.

Hard at work

Even if change was a challenging thing to do, especially for a young man who had nary an idea what the entertainment industry was like, Jeric taught himself to be patient and to open himself up to what his “new” world would offer.

Perhaps the reason for his apprehension during the early days of his showbiz career was that he was aware of his lack of skills in singing, dancing, and acting. He also knew that while his handsome face would make people notice, it would not be enough to get him roles and projects.

Despite this, Jeric soldiered on. He realized that if he let his insecurities get the better of him, he would not be able to move forward in his career. Instead of moping, Jeric chose to work hard--- harder than most of his peers.

Pausing briefly, the Kapuso actor recalls, “Ang hirap kasi, singing lang ’yung alam ko nung pumasok ako sa showbiz, banda, tugtog, and aside from that, wala na akong alam. ’Yung acting wala akong masyadong experience diyan. Sa hosting, wala talaga, pag-aaralan mo talaga siyaYou will undergo workshops pa. Kailangan mong maging masipag.

Jeric put in the long hours, observing and taking notes from the experienced actors around him. He made sure that before he arrived at the production set, he already knew his lines and the actors he'd be working with.

All the hard work was worth it. Jeric is proud that he didn't give up and that he kept trying and trying until he got things right.

Halos one year, workshop lang ako nang workshop. So, naappreciate ko naman ngayon na lahat ng pinagdaanan ko roon na… worth the wait.”

He now sees his showbiz career with vigor and enthusiasm. Jeric is excited to try different roles, do more, and explore opportunities that he has not done before.

“I’ve been here, ten years na sa showbiz. Pero ang dami ko pa ring gustong gawin na mga roles and ang dami ko pang hindi nagagawa. Gusto kong mag-comedy, action, kasi palaging ang napupunta sa akin na role ay medyo good boy. I like to explore the other side of me, dito sa pagiging aktor ko.”

A new world awaits

Not a lot know that Jeric is a Nursing graduate from Calamba Doctors College in Laguna. Back then, he did not dream of becoming a star.

He recalls how he got into show business with fondness and a little bit of candour, “Those times kasi I was studying for Nursing, graduating ako and medyo hindi ko pa trip talagang mag-artistaPero there was this handler na nag-invite sa akin na sumali ako sa isang pageant sa Laguna, so doon na nag-start. Nung nag-join ako ng pageant, I met my manager Tito Archie [Ilagan], former manager ni Ms. Bea Alonzo. Doon nag-start, na-convince ako kung pwede raw ba ako maging artista, so I gave it a try.”

At first, Jeric was not so sure if joining showbiz was the right choice for him. Still, he managed to give himself a little push, just to find out what might be in store for a newbie like him. What he didn’t expect was that things would happen so fast once he got a foot in the door.

“After that, ang bilis ng pangyayari. Kahit ako nabigla ako, from Nursing to show business! Ang bilis, parang ilang months lang naging artista na ako. I got projects, workshops, so ang bilis,” he says.

Looking back, Jeric cannot quite believe how “lucky” he was at the time. Aware of his blessings, he just embraced all the opportunities that came his way with open arms and without question.

Jeric later on realized that while showbiz was not part of his plans, his interests even as a child had always been leaning towards performing. He particularly remembers the time he was active in participating in extracurricular activities, like programs and other events in his school.

“Back in my childhood days, during those times hindi ko pa alam na gusto ko talagang mag-artista, nito ko na lang narealize nung artista na ako, nung binalikan ko ’yung lahat ng ano ko… Nung prep pa ako, nung elementary pa ako, I was so into extracurricular activities. Halos lahat yata ng activities nandoon ako, like intermissions, kakanta sa stage, naging escort, and tumutugtog ng guitar and instruments. Narealize ko na parang, dito rin pala talaga ako.”

Ako, I am proud to say na isa yata ako sa pinakamasipag doon sa acting workshop, kahit tanungin n’yo pa ’yung mentor namin. Lahat yata, tiniyaga ko. Halos one year, workshop lang ako nang workshop. So, naappreciate ko naman ngayon na lahat ng pinagdaanan ko roon na… worth the wait.”

Path to greatness

Over the years, Jeric learned that in order for him to stay afloat and relevant in this business, he must keep on improving. Having a love for the craft was not enough. One must have that hunger, that drive, that fire to make himself more bankable than the next guy.

Jeric's track record shows that he has both drive and hunger. Shortly after winning the grand prize in Protégé, he became part of GMA’s then Sunday noontime variety show Party Pilipinas. After this stint, he moved on to play different roles in many GMA shows.

In 2013, Jeric appeared as a guest in the hit Kapuso sitcom Pepito Manaloto and then later joined the cast of the drama thriller series, Love and Lies. After that, he portrayed the role of Eli Marasigan, the happy-go-lucky guy in the 2015 Philippine television drama series Pari ’Koy, which had Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes as its lead actor.

In 2016, Jeric took on the role of Vince in the groundbreaking afternoon drama series Destiny Rose, in which Ken Chan played a determined transwoman. From 2018 up to 2019, Jeric played the role of Brix, the son of Eloisa Lorenzo, the character portrayed by Jean Garcia in the hit GMA drama crime series, Ika-5 Utos.

In one of his past media interviews, Jeric said of his role, “I think the reason why I am part of the cast is because the role fits me well. We had workshops prior to being cast and tingin ko ’yun ang pinagbasehan nila.”

His appearances in such teleseryes only proved that Jeric, young as he was back then, had the caliber to take on many challenging acting roles.

After years of doing supporting roles, Jeric finally got the break that he was waiting for: his first ever lead role in the afternoon series Magkaagaw, which also starred Klea Pineda and Sheryl Cruz.

The teleserye Magkaagaw tells the story of a career-driven woman named Veron (Sheryl Cruz) whose husband leaves her for another woman named Laura. Years later, Veron crosses paths with Laura’s daughter Clarisse (Klea Pineda). To get back at Laura, Veron then starts an affair with Clarisse's husband Jio (Jeric Gonzales).

Magkaagaw began on October 21, 2019, and went on an extended run until March 31, 2021. Jeric’s convincing turn as a confused, philandering husband made him a household name and cemented his status as a bankable, dependable leading man.

“I’ve been here, ten years na sa showbiz. Pero ang dami ko pa ring gustong gawin na mga roles and ang dami ko pang hindi nagagawa. Gusto kong mag-comedy, action, kasi palaging ang napupunta sa akin na role ay medyo good boy.”

That same year, Jeric won the Best Single Performance by an Actor award at the 33rd PMPC Star Awards for his performance in Magpakailanman’s episode “Male Sex Slave sa Saudi.”

Jeric once said that 2022 would be his year. That seemed to be the case when Jeric bagged the lead role in the film Broken Blooms. This Filipino film, directed by Luisito “Louie” Lagdameo Ignacio and produced by BenTria Productions, tells the story of Jeremy (Jeric Gonzales) and Cynthia (Therese Malvar), a young couple dealing with marriage issues. It was also Jeric who sang the film's theme song, "Hihintayin Kita," which, interestingly, was written by the director himself.

Following its release, Broken Blooms was recognized by many award-giving bodies abroad. It won the Gold Remi Award at the Houston International Film Festival and the Best Narrative Feature Film at India’s Mokkho International Film Festival, where Jeric Gonzales and Therese Malvar were also awarded Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. The same film project also earned Jeric the Best Actor at the Harlem International Film Festival.

Despite the awards, Jeric still can’t believe what he has achieved through his role.

“’Yung pagiging award-winning, until now hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala. Pero ’yun talaga ang goal ko nung ginawa ko ’yung Broken Blooms. Sana manalo ko dito ng award, ibibigay ko rito lahat ng best ko. Pero ngayong nandito na siya hindi ako makapaniwala. Parang nangangarap pa rin ako pero totoo na siya. I’m very happy and I’m still overwhelmed pa rin dun sa thing na ’yunHindi naman siya nag-aano sa akin to stop learning.”

In his interview with GMANetwork.com, Jeric shares his proudest moment as a Kapuso, “Sa buong stay ko sa GMA, naramdaman ko talaga ’yung pagmamahal nila, ’yung pag-aalaga, ’yung pagprotekta nila. My proudest moment in GMA is ’yung nanalo ako sa Protegé. Hindi ko alam kung paano ko ie-explain ’yung sarili ko noon. ’Yung feeling ko that moment, ’yung emotions. It’s a rollercoaster ride, mahirap ’yung pinagdaanan namin doon but then, ’yung GMA opened for us an opportunity para maipakita lahat ng talent namin. Kaming lahat na galing Protegé,
very proud na dumaan kami doon.”

His awards are testament that Jeric is no longer a "protégé", as he is now a versatile and reliable actor.

“I like to explore the other side of me, dito sa pagiging aktor ko.”

But instead of letting the awards get into his head, he chose to look at these recognitions as his motivation and reminder to remain humble.

Ngayon, I’m hungry pa rin to learn and do more. I’m more inspired dahil sa achievement na ’yun. Aside from recognitions, awards, and everything, siguro it’s in yourself na you know na you’re confident enough to act, alam mo na nag-grow ka as an actor… Ako, I’m proud to say na  nag-grow ako dito sa GMA. All these years, lahat ng pinagdaanan ko nagamit ko siya talaga ngayon.”

Marching forward

This year has been good to Jeric, indeed.

After Broken Blooms, he was chosen to be part of another big project—the Philippine adaptation of the hit Korean Netflix series Start-Up, along with Kapuso stars Alden Richards, Bea Alonzo, Yasmien Kurdi, and many more.

Jeric is grateful for having the chance again to showcase his skills in another GMA drama series.

Nagulat talaga ako kasi pinapanood ko 'tong Start-Up, because I’m a fan of this Korean drama series. To my co-stars, ito na ’yung chance ko na makasama sila and I’ve been dreaming of
this talaga.”
Now molded by experience, Jeric wants to encourage those who are just starting out to keep on working on their craft.

“Dream big. Lahat ng pagdadaanan mo dito sa showbiz, lahat ng hirap, it’s nothing if you have a goal. Kahit pa anong hirap ang pagdaanan mo kukuhanin mo talaga ’yan. Personally, ako gano'n ako, kahit pa anong hirap, kahit gaano pa katagal ’yan basta kukuhanin ko ’yan kasi gusto ko ’yan.”

Ako, I’m proud to say na nag-grow ako dito sa GMA. All these years, lahat ng pinagdaanan ko nagamit ko siya talaga ngayon.”
