Writer Suzette Doctolero explains how beauty can be a disability in ‘Carmela’

2014 will be a melting pot of different new teleseryes for GMA. Among the teleseryes to be shown early next year is Carmela, with Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera taking on the title role. Carmela head writer Suzette Doctolero clues us in on what sets ‘Carmela’ apart from other teleseryes.

The talented writer explained, “Laging ang kuwento, pangit na babae na inaapi. Sa totoong buhay, ito ang nangyayari dahil kuwento ito ng isang babae na maganda siya, pero ‘yung mga tao sa paligid niya nakikita lang ‘yung ganda niya at natu-turn siya into a sexual [object].”

Doctolero, who was also responsible for writing Encantadia, Indio and the phenomenal series, My Husband’s Lover expounded on Carmela’s central conflict.

She said, “Hindi na nakikita na may talino siya at may talent siya. Parang ito ‘yung pinaka tema niya: ‘yung isang babae na imbes na positibo ang pagiging maganda niya, nagiging disability niya kasi napapahamak siya dahil sa sobra niyang ganda.”

On the plot of Carmela, Doctolero stated,“’Yung pinakakuwento niya, kuwento ng mag-inang Amanda at Carmela, at kung paano hindi siya (Carmela) magagaya sa kapalaran na sinapit ng kanyang ina.”
