R'Bonney Gabriel wants to continue sewing despite her busy schedule
What makes Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel unique from other pageant candidates is that not only does she wear Filipino-made gowns, some of them she made herself, and would love to continue sewing despite the busy schedules and responsibility bestowed upon her by the crown.
In the interview she had on the Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast, R'Bonney revealed that she still wears her own creations in the pageant, but that she's actually running out of them.
“I had a lot of creations left over from Miss Universe that I didn't wear because I overpacked like crazy. So I've been saving them to space them out as I'm wearing different things,” she said.
She added that she's trying to communicate with her team back in her home in Texas to help her get more designs in and have them made in New York. She even expressed her hope to have a studio and a sewing machine set up in her apartment so that she can get back into sewing.
“That's part of my DNA, I love to just stay inspired and the creativity when it flows, it just feels really good. Even if I'm stressed or busy if I can just get on to my sewing machine and make one piece, I just feel [at] ease [in] my mind,” she added.
During the pageant, she answered the question of how she would work to demonstrate this as an empowering and progressive organization. “I would use it to be a transformational leader. As a very passionate designer, I've been sewing for 13 years, I use fashion as a force for good.”
She added that aside from cutting down pollution by using recycled materials for the clothes she makes, she also teaches “women who have survived human trafficking and domestic violence” how to sew as she believes in the importance of investing in the community.
When asked if she would still have the time to sew despite her busy schedule and duties as the most recent Miss Universe, she answered, “I think you make time for in life what you wanna make time for.”
“If I'm able to have a sewing machine in my apartment I can work late at night, I love working at night, even if it's 10:00 pm or midnight, I can still get something done or I can wake up and get an hour in here and there and I'd be able to make pieces,” she added.
