IN PHOTOS: The many times Margielyn Didal made us smile
Margielyn Didal may have first caught our attention when she won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, but her moment in the sun came during her Olympic debut.
The Pinay skateboarder may have failed to bring home an Olympic medal for the Philippines this time, but she definitely did not come home empty handed.
When Margielyn represented the Philippines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday, July 26, she became an instant celebrity worldwide because of her fun personality, humor, friendliness, sportsmanship and overall good vibes.
Many loved how despite having an awkward fall and suffering an ankle injury, the 22-year-old Cebuana skateboarder powered through with a smile and finished 7th during the women's street skateboarding event at the Ariake Skate Park.
Skateboarding is one of the new sports that were introduced at the Tokyo Olympics' program this year, in a bid to pique the younger generation's interest in the Olympics.
True enough, the younger Olympians were the ones who bagged the medals: 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya of Japan won gold, 13-year-old Rayssa Leal of Brazil won silver, and 16-year-old Funa Nakayama of Japan took home the bronze medal.
Margielyn showed true sportsmanship all throughout the competition and even cheered and photobombed her opponents.
Moreover, Margielyn's friendliness to Brazil's Rayssa Leal made her a trending topic and an instant star in Brazil.
So, don't be surprised if you see a lot of Brazilians showing some love for our very own inspiring Filipina Olympian.
