IN PHOTOS: Actors who portrayed Andres Bonifacio on film and TV
Besides Jose Rizal, no Filipino hero is as popular and revered as Andres Bonifacio.
In essence, Rizal and Bonifacio were opposites. The former favored a peaceful and diplomatic approach against the Spaniards, while the latter leaned towards radical means through armed combat.
What both shared though was their fervent patriotism. Both heroes would contribute greatly to the country's liberation from Spanish rule.
Their influence continued to loom large against succeeding conquerors--the Americans and the Japanese--and even long after since the country achieved total independence.
It's not surprising that both Rizal and Bonifacio have become Pinoy pop culture symbols as well.
Bonifacio alone has often been portrayed in popular mass media platforms including comic books, films, television programs, and even video games.
Movies and TV, of course, are the two most popular mediums in which Bonifacio's persona is often characterized.
The revolutionary hero after all makes an interesting subject given his middle-class background, the way he co-founded a revolutionary society, and his daredevil attitude.
So with that said, here are some of the actors who assumed the revolutionary leader on television and the big screen.
Julio Diaz
The award-winning actor portrayed the brave Katipunero twice. First was in the 1992 movie Bayani, followed by the 1995 educational TV series with the same title.
Gardo Versoza
Gardo donned the Andres Bonifacio persona in the award-winning GMA Films' bio film, José Rizal, in 1998.
Alfred Vargas
The incumbent Quezon City 5th District Congressman portrayed the revolutionary leader in the movies The Trial of Andres Bonifacio in 2010 and the 2012 bio film Supremo.
Mark Anthony Fernandez
The son of actress Alma Moreno and the late action superstar Rudy Fernandez assumed the role of Bonifacio in the Lupang Hinirang music video produced by GMA Network in 2010.
Cesar Montano
Cesar moved from portraying Rizal to Bonifacio via the 2012 historical biopic El Presidente: General Emilio Aguinaldo Story and the First Philippine Republic or El Presidente.
Jolo Revilla
The Cavite vice governor played Bonifacio in the GMA-7 drama-epic fantasy series Indio in 2013.
Sid Lucero
Sid played the Filipino revolutionary leader in the GMA-7 historical drama TV series Katipunan in 2013 and Ilustrado in 2014.
Robin Padilla
Robin channeled his inner Bad Boy to portray the courageous Katipunero in the 2014 historical drama movie, Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo.
Isko Moreno
From one Batang Tondo to another.
In June this year, Film director Erik Matti and producer Dondon Monteverde announced their decision to tap Manila Mayor Isko Moreno to play the brave Filipino hero on the big screen.
The two are working on an Andres Bonifacio biopic, revealing new discoveries on the life of the fallen revolutionary leader.
Vouching for Isko to assume the role is no less than Susan Meyer, the great-granddaughter of Andres Bonifacio.
No word, however, when the movie, tentatively titled 'May Pag-asa,' will be shown.
Still, the hype generated by the initial publicity along with the endorsement of Bonifacio's kin is enough to get viewers intrigued.
