TRIVIA: Superstar athletes turned artistas and TV hosts
In the Philippines, it's not surprising to see popular athletes trying their luck in the entertainment scene.
Yes, we have a long list of names of celebrities who were once collegiate stars or members of the Philippine national team. Most of them did not only represented our country in various sporting events, but also brought pride to the country by winning titles and medals.
Take for example "The Magician," Efren Bata Reyes, a world-renowned billiard player , who appeared in several local films including acting alongside the great Fernando Poe Jr.
The rise of volleyball in the Philippines in the recent years catapulted many names into stardom. For example, Gretchen Ho, a former player of the Ateneo Lady Eagles volleyball team has found a new calling as a TV host.
And of course, there's iBilib host and chinito heartthrob Chris Tiu who played in the PBA and represented the country in different basketball competitions.

Jimmy Santos
'Eat Bulaga' Dabarkads Jimmy Santos was a professional basketball player before becoming a TV host and actor. He played as a shooting guard for the 7-Up Uncoals in the PBA's Inaugural Season (1975).
Christine Jacob-Sandejas
Former 'Eat Bulaga' host Christine Jacob was a swimmer before becoming a host in Eat Bulaga. She won a gold medal in the 1983 Southeast Asian Games.
Freddie Webb
Before entering showbiz, Freddie Webb played for the Tanduay Rhum Makers in the PBA from 1976 to 1978. He was also a member of the National Basketball Team that competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. He later on became a basketball coach, a congressman, and also a senator.
Benjie Paras
Benjie Paras may be known by the younger generation as a comedian and father of Andre and Kobe Paras. But before becoming an artista, Benjie was a multi-awarded professional basketball player in the PBA and later on became an assistant coach for the San Beda Red Lions. He sometimes appear on sports TV programs as commentator and analyst.
Robert Jaworski
Robert Jaworski Sr., a.k.a. The Big J, is one of the most popular Pinoy basketball players, and even hailed as one of the greatest of all time. In 2005, he was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame and was also named included in the PBA's 40 Greatest Players. He later on entered showbiz and politics. He appeared in movies like 'Fastbreak' (1971), 'Kasing-kasing Ko' (1973), and 'Hulihin si Tiagong Akyat' (1973).
Onyok Velasco
Manuel “Onyok” Velasco Jr. is best known for his comedic roles in TV shows. But before that, he won 2 medals as a professional boxer, a gold medal at the 1994 Asian Games and a silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Alvin Patrimonio
Arguably one of the most loved PBA players of all time, next to The Living Legend, Robert Jaworski Sr. In 2011, Alvin was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame and he also has several PBA records such as most consecutive games played (596). He was also part of the Philippine National Team for four consecutive Asian games from 1986 to 1998. He starred in movies namely: 'Bondying: The Little Big Boy' (1989), 'May Isang Tsuper ng Taxi' (1990), 'Dobol Dribol' (1992), and 'Dalaw' (2009).
Jerry Codiñera
Jerry Codiñera a.k.a. The Defense Minister is a retired multi-awarded professional basketball player, who entered showbiz in '90s. He starred in the box office hit 'Last Two Mintues' (1990) alongside Alvin Patrimonio. He also appeared in 'Tasya Fantasia' (1994) and 'Lip Sync Battle Philippines' (2016).
Efren Bata Reyes
Efren Bata Reyes is dubbed as 'The Magician' and often regarded as one of the greatest pool players of all time. He has won over 70 international titles and is also the first player to win world championships in two different disciplines in pool. He dabbled into movies in the early 2000s, starring alongside The King of Philippine movies, the late Fernando Poe Jr., in 'Pakners' (2003). And in 2004, Efren also appeared in 'The Color of Money' and 'Black Widow vs. The Magician.' In January 2021, the 66-year-old pool master denied the fake news that circulated online that he was already dead.
Bonel Balingit
Retired professional basketball player Bonel Balingit, a.k.a. The Gentle Giant, did movies in the late '90s and early 2000s during his playing years. He appeared in movies namely and 'Isprikitik: Walastik Kung Pumitik' (1999), 'Hayop sa Porma, Hanep sa Ganda' (2005), and 'Pasaway na Multo' (2005).
Jayvee Gayoso
Jayvee Gayoso is also a former professional basketball player who starred in several movies such as 'Vampira' (1994), 'Daddy's Angel' (1996), and 'On the Job' (2013).
Rich Alvarez
Rich Alvares, husband of R&B singer Kyla, is also one of the many professional basketball players who have had a cameo in a movie. He appeared in the movie 'First Day High' (2006).
Johnny Abarrientos
Johnny Abarrientos, a.k.a. The Flying A, is one of the most popular professional basketball players who crossed over into showbiz. He was the shortest player to win the the Most Valuable Player award in the PBA in 1996. In 1997, he starred in the movie 'Go Johnny Go' (1997) with the now legendary TV host and our very own Kapuso, Willie Revillame.
Rudy Hatfield
Rudy Hatfield is a retired Filipino-American basketball player. In 2004, he made a cameo in the movie 'Masikip sa Dibdib: The Boobita Rose Story' (2004),which was top-billed by his then girlfriend, Ruffa Mae Quinto.
Chris Tiu
Chris Tiu's basketball fame started when he was playing for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. He later on played for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA from 2012 to 2018. He was also captain of the Sinag Pilipinas team that competed in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games. Chris started hosting TV shows in 2007 and is currently the host of GMA's educational program titled 'iBilib.' He announced his retirement from professional basketball in January 2019.
Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski
Mikaela María Antonia Cojuangco, more popularly known as Mikee Cojuangco, was an equestrienne before becoming an actress and TV host. She won the gold medal for the individual show jumping event at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea. She starred in several films during the '90s. Most notable of them was the blockbuster movie 'Do Re Mi (1996)' where she starred alongside Donna Cruz and Regine Velasquez. Mikee also had a weekly drama anthology named after her, which aired on GMA-7. She later on married Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr., son of Philippine basketball's living legend, Robert Jaworski Sr.
John Vic De Guzman
The Philippine men's volleyball team made noise during the 2019 SEA Games after winning the silver medal, ending the decade-long medal drought of the country in the event. Instrumental to this win was former CSB star player John Vic De Guzman, who is now a Kapuso after signing a contract with GMA Artist Center in 2020. John Vic will showcase his acting potential in the rom-com series 'Owe My Love.'
